So how many vets with combat deployments are reading this thread and laughing at freedom or death?
FOD, were you the cherry lieutenant that gave Kid Rock a hard time for wearing a flag when he came to Iraq to do a US show? FOD, heh, I just realized what that acronym means to aviation folks. Seems appropriate. |

Nite Ize S-Binder and 550 cord because I can be a dummy In case anyone is considering the United Shield bump helmet, save yourself the time and effort and just get the Ops Core or Team Wendy Bump helmet. I had to drill the holes bigger to fit the screws that came with the TW Cam Fit. Buy once, cry once and all that. I reviewed the Spartan Village Strobe/Counter Weight pouch here. I will eventually upgrayedd from the Rhino, but it's going to be a while. I just want to say that this thread has been a treasure trove of information. Aside from being issued AN/PVS-7s and 14s and doing weapons qual and driving qual with them, I wasn't really taught anything about how NVGs and how your NODs, helmet, and your weapon's IR divice really is a complete system. Ryan at Nightlong walked me through every step of the process so I wasn't placing multiple orders with him to finally get right. The blem tube from Nightlong is barely "blemmed," works great, and the lower price point really helped me step into .civ NVGs comparable to what I've been issued. I'm pretty sure I've used worse tubes downrange. This picture was taken without any IR illuminator on. There are only three "blems": the one about 2/3 of the way down at 6 o'clock, the small dot on my dog's rear right thigh, and there is another smaller one that is extremely hard to see in this pic because it gets lost in the grass at the 4 o'clock position, about half way from center to the outside of the tube. |

Okay, lets talk MICH upgrades. They are good cheap helmets at sub $100 and a lot of us have them.
I currently have the team wendy "Epic" helmet liner, and the ops core H-nape. I "love" the epic liner system. Full stop. I only like H-nape though. while leaps and bounds more steady than the original ACH chinstrap, it is annoying sometimes. The buckle always pinches the shit out of me, and my head size is right on the line of using medium or large. The smaller was full open, the large is fully shut. It annoys the shit out of my beard. I am now looking at the team wendy camfit chinstrap, the $100 one. Is the comfort of the team wendy going to be significantly greater than the H-Nape? They make it seem like the boa dial on the back lets ne loosen everythibng, button up, and my adjustments on the helmet will remain the same. Or am I stuck getting my beard pinched for the rest of my days and the grass is greener on the other side? |
I'm in the same boat, while OpsCore has worked well for me, I'm eyeballing the TW chinstrap. And I LOVE the Epic pad set I have stuffed into mine.
ACH with Sentinels,LPBP, strobe, light, and Contour is gonna be heavy as shit and I want it as stable as humanly possible. I've heard great things about the TW CamFit and how much more stable it is even with the chinstrap unbuckled. |

I can't speak for the TW Cam-Fit specifically, but I can say that IMHO, the Ops-Core Occ Dial suspension is far more comfortable and stable for me than the H-Nape, which is still what I use in my ACHs, and I understand that the Cam-Fit is similar in concept, and even more comfortable.
Whether Occ Dial, Worm Dial, or Cam-Fit, I definitely think that the additional adjustment is definitely the way to go, and it does allow the whole thing to be far more comfortable and stable. For low-intensity stuff (just walking around/casual shooting) with my Ops-Core FASTs, I often won't bother to buckle the chinstrap, and just tighten down the dial, and it's generally stable enough to support dual-tube NVGs when properly fitted, though, again, if I was doing something active, I would buckle the chinstrap. With that being said, I've found that with the Occ Dial, the chinstrap does not need to be quite as tight as the H-Nape to get the same kind of stability. Also, if you're having issues with getting pinched when you try to buckle the chinstrap, regardless of what type, is that you loosen the straps when removing the helmet before unbuckling. When you go to don the helmet again, the straps will be loose, and you can buckle the chin-strap, then manipulate the sliders to get a tight, comfortable fit. Most of the time, I only adjust the two front straps, and leave the rear ones fitted. I've considered swapping out my H-Napes for the TW as well, and/or just buying the Ops-Core MICH Occ-Dial, but I'm holding off because I'm thinking of getting a Lux Liner for one of my FASTs, and I might try to see if I can retro-fit the leftover Occ-Dial into my ACH (the replacement brow pad is $13 from Ops-Core). If it works, awesome. Otherwise, I might look into the more purpose designed upgrades again. ~Augee |
My fast ballistic gives me a fuckin' headache after a few hours on my dome.
I need to look into other liners/suspension options. |
There was supposed to be a LUX for the BASE, but no sight of it yet.
Granted, it doesn't look super water repellent. I've used my FAST BASE mostly for skiing with NODs and then as a camera mount for wakeboarding and the standard plastic and padding really works for that. |

Going back to Europe for a few days, then back home in the USA. The helmet on the right is advanced in that, the Night Vision is integrated in the helmet itself. Pretty cool stuff, but it's from a long, long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away. Enjoy your lives. Helmets by SoloDallas, on Flickr |
