I took a few pics the other day I thougth would fit on this thread. I have a comparison of my AN/PVS-7Bs with an OMIN 3 tube (45lp/mm, the rest I don't know, no tube sheet) to my ITT 6015s with 64 lp/mm, 26.1 singal to noise, and .960 EBI.

For the low light pic, I had the blinds closed, there was some ambient street light outisde and the LED light from my coffee maker and cable box.
First, PVS-7B, low light:

ITT 6015 in the same conditions, same angle:

Next, high light test, Ambient street light through closed blinds, clock radio and cheap night light on the other side of the room.

PVS-7B

ITT 6015:

I hope that was interesting to some of you! One thing to note, the PVS-7 has a "greener" color to it's phosphr, the ITT 6015 has a more "yellowish" tint, that change was implemented several years ago to give increased resolution. Personaly, I prefer the darker green, but the yellow green of the 6015 does work well.

Here's a few more pics with the G7 PVS-14 combo.

It can be a little difficult to get really sharp photos, however the G7 image stabilization seems to help here a bit, if you get the PVS-14 focussed correctly to start with.
Anyway, I need to spend some more time with the combo (too many 14hr days at work!), but it is really easy to use and does give pretty acceptable results.

I should probably remove the demist and sacrificial lens (or at least clean them) for photo use, but these are the kinds of results you get by just using the PVS-14 as is off the helmet mount.
Going to experiment around with Macro mode without the demist lens, and see if I get any better focus across the frame.

Here is some of my first attemps at NV pics.  I am going to get a tripod and try again tonight.  Pictured are round bails and a house.

These pics do not do my unit justice at all.

I am using a Fujifilm FinePix 4.0 Mega Pixel Model A340.  I have it in auto mode and turned off the flash.  In the first set, I didn't use a tripod, the second set I did.  My dad has been into photography for more than 30 years and has tons of camera equipment.  We have used his high end digital camera with good results as well, I will get the model for you later, as I am not quite sure.  I found that the use of a tripod is necessary.  I mount the camera on the tripod and put the eye piece of the 14 up to the camera lens.  I adjusted the eye piece so that the image is most clear with my eye right at the eye piece.  I also make several pics of each object and adjust the gain to about 3 to 4 different settings for each shot to play with the brightness some.  My girlfriend has a Sony Cybershot 7.2 megapixal and it doesn't work well because the camera has a red light that it uses for focusing the camera in low light so it interferes with the pic.  There may be a way to cut this off, but I haven't figured it out yet.  I have a few more ideas for pics that I may try again tonight.  Thanks again Vic for the awesome unit,  I have had more fun with this thing in the past 9 months than you can imagine.

Went out last night and took some more pics.

This is an out school house about 400 yards off.

Same school house, but with Da Torch shinning on it, my battery was starting to go but it still illuminated it enough to be able to see detail in the darker areas of the front of the building.

Nice pics!  I`m not to far from Ya,  (near Spartanburg) Lake Hartwell is a nice clean lake, unlike Lake Wylie on the Catawba river.

What is nice is Lake Jocassee, you can see a beer can under 20 ft of water and read the label.  I like to get up there one night and get some NVG shots of the mountains.

Yea, its hard to find any true starlight conditions, (no skyglow from cities) I took my pvs-14 up on the Appalachian Trail and was amazed! the woods come alive at night if you sit still for an hour or so (watch out for bears & wild boar). Lake Fontaine is nice too.

My setup is as per the information within the picture:

Im planning to get a few 'thru the scope' shots in the next day or so.

Thanks for looking,

I think it is cool how IR reflects off of different objects.  The backpack is OD green, but looks almost white and the rifle, while anodized, looks almost crome.

Well I just joined the ol' Night Vision party, and consequently found this forum, and it's so nice to see some quality discussions of night vision stuff. I've been interested in it for years but could never justify the cost, but got a *killer* deal from a friend of mine (former Navy/LEO). He had an "old" Gen 3 monocular with a 3X lens and a pelican case for a price too good to pass up. (you'll all kill me if I tell you what I got it for helmet

Here's the unit. A little chunkier than the latest stuff, but nicely built. runs on two AAA:

Thanks for the welcome. I really enjoyed reading your comparison tests. Please do an IR laser illuminator one!

The unit I have is made by "Tactical Night Systems" but I can't find any info about them at all. Looks like they were absorbed by someone else or no longer exist. My friend bought it as a LEO in 1994 or so. The manual says they made Gen 2 and Gen 3 versions of it. Both lenses are camera-style and have adjustable apertures, which is nice. Image quality is pretty darn good from what I can see in comparing to the latest Gen 3 stuff posted here.

Here's a little movie clip I took in my living room just for kicks.

Looks like a NAIT NVPS-10.  This was my first NV device back in the early 90's. It was a Gen 2. Vic

Correct, Vic, this is indeed NVPS-10. But most opf those were made with Gen3 51linepair tubes. Just like this one, if it was a Gen2 (MX-9916), the image must have been blue/green.

SEE THROUGH THE EYES OF THE ENEMY ;)

I got this very interesting image shot through a genuine Russian Gen3 tube... I am not an author of this picture and unfortunately cannot specify the original source, I have saved this image onto my HDD good two years ago from Godonlyknowswhich website. If anyone should feel hurt by this copyright violation, I will gladly remove the picture upon request.

AFAIK, the tube is a civilian KATOD EPM102G-03 installed in Dedal DVS-8 or AN/PVS-7B, tech specs are 57 lp/mm, 1500 micA/lm, EBI 0.25, SNR 23. Military types, of course, have higher figures.

EDIT. THE ORIGINATOR OF THE PICTURE HAS BEEN FOUND, MANY THANKS TO MR. KARLHEINZ GROSS FROM GERMANY!

thanks foe the positive Id ok the unit I have, that was quite helpful. After a hour on google though, I came up rather dry on a source for a head mount of weapon mount. Any ideas where I might look for that type of thing for this older unit?

You don't need specialized mounts for this one.. A PVS-7 headmount and J-Arm will do the job..

Hey all/Victor,
I'm new to the forums and I have a few questions.  I have the same gear as Xmetal.  It's a NAIT device that I purchased a number of years ago.  It came with a 1x and a 3x lense and an Elcan weapons mount and is a Gen 3 unit.   The pic of the unit (sold as a "Viper Night Vision Weapons Sight" is below:
http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/4207/ar15eq5.jpg

The question I have is this:  As you can see the unit sits way to high on the carry handle. Is the only way around this is to buy a flatop upper reciever?  If so, any recommendations on where I might pick one up?
Next question: Is it possible to retrofit the sight to have some type of video out cable to pipe the image into a small display?

Here is a shot of the Viper by itself.
http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/6937/vipervj4.jpg
Thanks

Mark

Ok Guys I have a question,

Just got done building my 10/22 and I was wondering whats the best bang for your buck in the Night Vision / Low light scope dept for 22 cal. I already have a leopold on it now.
I'm looking at 100 - 125 yrd. MAX during the day and possibly 25-50 at night.

Also I might want to swap it to one of my AR's

Should I do a rail mount and switch back and forth from a day scope to night vision scope? Maybe thats the way to go?

Perhaps also being able to use it in a headset?

I dunno what do you think?
Thanks in advance

Not really an expert, but I have an opinion.  For a cheap setup that I am guessing would see varmenting uses you MAY be able to get away with a Gen 1.  I looked at a 4x ATN Paladin once, then realized it lacked a riticule.  the guy at the store looked at then said "ok, if you look real closely you what looks like a smudge but its actually...."  ATN also has the worst rep in the business, but $3-500 vs $1100-$1500 for gen 2might work for you (I have D-300 gen2 or will tomarrow)

As for switching optics I know more about that.  If you have a weaver rail you're G2G, go to GG&G at gggaz.com.  They have weaver rail mount with a QD lever to mount to another weaver rail for abt. $200.  I have it for my AR with a day scope on it and my EOTech552 on its own GG&G QD mount plus a mount for my NV monocular on a QD mount so I can go from a day scope to a CQB red dot to NV to back up irons.

GG&G has had good costumer service but depending on what you're getting it might take a long time to ship but, they don't charge your card till it does.

hope that helps
