Not having shot a BP gun since the mid 70's, I bought this Hawken .45. The stock was oil finished by the previous owner. I bought some .440 balls, powder, and patches but still need a powder flask and measure. This should be quite a bit of fun.

That is a great looking rifle!

I have the .50 caliber version and it is a lot of fun to shoot……

I built a 50 cal flintlock version while in college.  Fun project and shooter.

They are an absolute blast to shoot.  The .45 uses the same barrel blank as the .50, so the extra weight provides some recoil reduction.

I would also get a non-wood range rod.  The wooden one gets grungy and the paint wears off when you use it for everything.

These really are pretty guns.

A while ago I made a thread about converting mine to a flint-lock.  The thread is long gone but i can find some pix if you're interested.

Also i put a tang peep sight on it and a front sight with a smaller "bead".  Damn accurate even with the 240 gr Maxi Hunters.  I use a .44 bore button between the powder and the ball for added lube.

I also have a flintlock T/C Hawken with two barrels, but neither of them are factory. One is a Green Mountain barrel in .50 and the other is a custom .36 barrel.

great gun.

a .45 caliber buffalo bullet knocks the piss out of a deer and the maxi ball type loads should shoot very well.
that gun should be a moderate twist gun. test it with a round ball, you might have to back off on the charges to get good accuracy.
