So...dumb question of the day.  I'm about to buy a repop CW musket and went shopping for musket caps.  The popular caps, CCI , not say "for re-enactors".  Seems they have changed their design/specs to cater specifically to that crowd.  I want to shoot this thing, not just pop caps.  What kind of cap should I be looking for?

The CCI four winged caps should be be good to go. I have used them for live fire and they work.  Unless you are shooting for competition all you need is to ignite the powder. Science takes care of everything else. However, the RWS caps are much better.

CCI reduced the charge in the reenactor caps because the caps were fragging in reenactors guns because of clogged nipples and failure to clean them. Its a problem caused by dumbasses who fail to clean their shit and get scared of cap fragments and then cry "OMG these gun things are dangerous" so apparently cCI fixed it by making the caps about as hot as toy gun caps. Fuckin sissies and lawyer will take the fun out of everything eventually!

Is there a model number for the 4 wing (good) CCIs or are they just old stock?

I'm new at this too but would a #11 nipple and caps work?

No, musket caps are way bigger

You can  change out the nipple and use the smaller #11 caps. I did it on a Zouave but later changed back to the musket caps.

I recently bought a tin of CCI #0301 four wing musket caps. They are labeled for general use. However, the label on the tin is a sticker. I peeled the sticker off, and a nearly identical label was under the sticker. It seemed to be a silk screen label, and it said for re enactment use. I haven't fired any yet.

Edit;

It appears CCI doesn't make the #0300 any more.

I've scoured the internet looking for anyone with RWS caps with no luck.  Last guy I talked to who does a fair amount of business in them told me he is hearing May at the earliest from his distributor.....

I have CCI musket caps 100 in the tins I got from WallMarts about 10 years .The cans ere in Plastic Wrappers to hang on display. They are marked 304. I have not seen the 304 markings mentioned anywhere. What might 304 designate?  ......Jet71.

Funny you should mention that.  I saw some on CL for sale in this config (0304 on outer pack, 0300 on the tin).  i sent an email to CCI to ask last night.  Do yours have 0300 on the tin itself?

Very interesting. I just checked my stash. The tins are marked 300. the outer, packaging is marked 304. Igot them at Walmarts in the close out aisle ,for .50cents a tin of 100. I got 1000 and left another 1000 for someone else to grab. I here they are now selling for $65.00/1000. If you can find them. My Navy Arms,Remington 1860 Zoave  (1960) First production run ( $ 89.95) low serial # has been hanging on my wall. I bought the rifle from Val Forgget in person (Forgett?) I also got a n1851 Navy Colt .36 Cal. and aRemington old Army .44cal. first run low serial #'s. When he had  little part time store in North Bergen ,NJ. He showed me the proto type model for the 1851 Navy.. At that time there was no one offering Repro firearms. There was a guy making 1851 Navy Colt Revolvers in his garage in Florida one at a time for around $250. witha two year wait. Val sold his for $89.95.........Jet71.

I just scored 13 tins of 0300 at 6 bucks each. Also found a vendor who has RWS so I bought a 1000 of those too.  Just in time.  My 1853 Parker Hale Enfield got here today.

The RWS caps are good. The big question is where are the pictures of your 1853?

For those keeping score, I recieved this back from CCI:
"GIJoe, the 304 and 300 Musket caps are the same cap. The 304 was in a clam pack and the 300 was in a display carton. They both have been discontinued and the only musket cap made is the 301 for reenactment."

I almost pulled the trigger on the Pedi Enfield.  Everything I read said it is the best repo currently made (and possibly ever).

I had read that it was good but I dident see "ever" wow?!   which leads to a question..i was thinking about having lodgwood strip the blue off and give it the "armory bright" finish the originals had, has anbody ever delt with lodgewood? as seen here http://www.lodgewood.com/A-Side-By-Side-Comparison-of-our-Defarbed-Enfield-against-an-Original-Enfield_c_205.html

Depends what you are going for, I guess.  If you are heavily into re-enacting it may be worth it.  My PH has some collect-ability on it's own so I'm not sure how much to mess with it.  In the end I want to shoot it so the minor differences between the real and the repro aren't a big deal to me.

I was reading through some of the CW forums that the 1853 PH was a "continuation" of the civil war guns!!  I don't know about that but I did read they were very good as well. I did want mine to be as close to the CW guns..im still on the fence about it... I do want to give the Pritchett balls a try. they look like fun to make and adds a bit of history to shooting the 1853 enfield.

Nice 3 bander!  I've got a Euro Arms that I've had since the mid 90's!  They're no longer in business, and apparently Pedersoli bought their tooling to build their line!!
I've shot plenty of the cci caps, they make a boom!!

I put a musket cap nipple on my Renegade .50 because I love the way a musket cap disentegrats compared to a standard #11. sad to hear CCI is no longer making the standard musket caps.
