I just picked up a buubba long branch.   Fortunately Bubba wasn't allowed any metal cutting tools.

He did a number on the lumber though.
- missing butt plate and sanded badly there
- chopped forenstock
- missing handguard.

The q is would long branch have had the smooth or serrated handguard in 45?

Not sure this helps, but mines a '43 and has a serrated hand guard.

No that helps.  Assuming it's an OEM part.  I wasn't sure how they came about.   I saw a lot of them on Savages.  My Fazakerly has a groovy one too but it's been FTR'd.

My long branch is FTR'd too so I guess it doesn't matter.  I did find new long brAnch short and
normal stocks.  The sticker is finding a walnut forestock.

Thanks guys.

I've found new or excellent wood online except that is for a good
Walnut forestock.  What I'm finding are listed as drill rifles or Indian drill rifles.

I don't want to buy the other wood until I get my hands on a solid fore stock.

Either is correct. Depended on the subcontractor who made the hand guard...

1943 Long Branch is serrated. My stock is also numbered to the rifle.

My '45 has the grooves. All other parts are original to the rifle, so I'm assuming the stock is as well. The rifle was FTR'd in '53, but the stock appears to have just been sanded(the grooves are shallow) and repaired(toe and heel) instead of being replaced. It has the correct alloy buttplate, too.

My 1/49 (F) is smooth, but I doubt that's any help.
