guys says its an actual ex sniper mosin.
I confess I don't know what markings would show it to be an actual sniper model,
Do they look correct?
but someone cut down the BBL and the handguards
worth buying it for $250 (with an included 440 spamcan) to restore?
I see some unmolested MN bbls for $60 online...doesn't seem too hard to install a new one...
then would need a new stock too.

Not to me. With the spam can if you wanted to shoot it as-is then it's ok I guess.

Well, I was considering converting one of my excellent shooting 91/30s into a sniper...
But honestly I would rather not drill and tap the receiver on a perfectly good rifle.
Figure $160 worth of ammo, makes the gun $90.

Go for it if you see it that way. I still see the tins as $90 so the rifle was $160 in my view. Just buy it already if you want a project.

Looks like it might be a 91/59.

They were shortened from full length rifles post-war.

If the rear sight is full length, but has the numbers 11-20 milled off, then it's a factory 91/59.

Cool that it's on a ex-sniper if a real 91/59, but not worth restoring.

If it's a bubba cut down, I'd pass on it.

well, I'm guessing it isn't factory since there is no provision for the front barrel band
it DOES have the scope mount holes however!
what are the odds that one of the new production PU scope mounts will line up?

I suppose if it shoot decent, I could just put on one of the rear sight base scope mounts, hammer on a front barrel band
and use it as is as a shorty rifle

There are 3 different lengths between the centers of the two main screw holes on ex-snipers. (53.5mm, 54.5mm, and 55.5mm)

You would have to measure to know which one to get.

I would pass on it though since it's a bubba. Not worth trying to re-sniper it.

So making it back into a sniper is out...but maybe I might try to knock him down to $200 and do something like this
17inch MOSIN NAGANT compact beast walk through ZRUS

Or maybe I will just go back to the original plan and get an M39...

I wouldn't restore it but I absolutely would take that deal.

Since it is an ex sniper, it's probably more accurate than the typical mosin.

You would have to pay me to own a bubba'd rifle.

Well, for $60 and with it already being bubba's, I wouldn't feel bad refinishing it an setting it up as a handy beater carbine

Whatever accuracy it had was probably affected by the shortening of the barrel.

No, its not worth it.  Not really worth it to resniper a un bubbaed ex sniper let alone a bubba'd one.

As the poster above states there are 3 different pin screw set ups, and you can bet the one you need you wont find.

Oh, and rebarrel a mosin? Hell of alot more work than you know, sights need to be indexed, more than likely the extractor relief will need recut on new barrel, chamber reamed to headspace.  oh, and that doesnt even mention taking the old one off

Spam cans go for about $150 so if you buy it shoot it and forget snipering it.

Might be worth the buy just to have --- but like said above , you'd think those barrels were welded on when you try to get one loose and may very well twist the action without a good vice and wrench.

Shortening it should make it more accurate, new crown with zero erosion and shorter barrels are inherently more accurate.

Depends on the harmonics of the barrel.

I would buy it for that even just for spare Mosin parts . I need an extractor for one and some misc. for a project I am building on a Bubbad Hex 91 I bought .

. Got it for $200 with 420rds of surplus ammo. Bore is pitted but the rifling is shiny.

Shoots decent 100yd groups for having a 0* crown

A quick slowmo fireball and steel on steel strike

Is that a solder blob on the front sight?

why yes, yes it is!

planning on using an optic anyway, may just cut that sight off and put the brass stacker replacement over it.
I donno, I do have a front sight adjustment tool coming, will see if it will get dialed in, then I might just clean it up and blue it.

but again, $60

@1srelluc has a rescued 91/30 he cut down into a mini sniper - the original rifle had a bulged barrel. His turned out pretty nice.

Did you use a rear bbl band for the front one on yours after you shortened it?

Since  it has been reworked already  and nothing is really lost by doing more,  I would get a archh angle stock and  modify the bolt  to be bent then put one ot the  reproduction scopes on it.
