ETA:  Looking at a different 1903. Please read my most recent post in this thread.

I'm looking at a low 5 digit serial number RIA 1903.  I understand that they are considered "unsafe" to shoot, but what would the collectors value be?

It depends on the originality.  Original rod bayonet configuration, many bunches of money. Original 1903 configuration, less bunches of money, but still many. WW1 configuration, less bunches of money, but still a few. Interwar period that was built into a proper rifle by Springfield, not so many bunches of money, but still some. WW2 overhaul, not so much.

All the above are collectible. Do you have more info or some pictures?

I completely forgot to mention that it's missing the front barrel band and the rear sight.  Other than that I don't know much about it or about 1903s in general.  It's 94,000 serial number range.  I will get what pictures I was sent posted and try to get more.

O3A3 handguard which means is definitely missing the rear sight and most likely the sight collar. Barrel is probably an 03A3 barrel. Avoid unless it's $100 or so.

No real collector value. Mainly the sum of the remaining parts. $100 is (cough) a bit low. $250-300 maybe.

Its a potato pic with several glaring problems and very little info. A pig in a poke pic gets a pig in a poke price. If all the parts are good, it's $3-400 for someone who wants to take the time. If they're not, it's a burn waiting to happen. For someone who doesn't know 03s, it's a pass unless it's a total steal.

It's the only pic he had available.  Guy wants $400...think I'll pass

Yeah

Looks like a parts gun that got tossed together...

I'd offer no more than 150.00

No one would build a functional rifle without a rear sight,

I'm betting it's a drill rifle.

Pass

Well he said he's shot it before he knew about the low serial number ordeal but I'm not sure how it was accomplished with no rear sight!

There's something missing in his story that he apparently isn't going to reveal unless asked directly...Tapped receiver, drill rifle...something. At this point I'd treat him like the plague, or offer $50 and see how insulted he gets. .

That's a WW2 "scant stock." Looks like someone slapped together a bunch of parts. A proper WW2 rebuild wouldn't be missing the rear sight!

Ok I passed on that last one.  I'm now looking at one that is 1918 manufacture, no import marks, all original (according to seller) though it has a HS 11 44 replacement barrel. S/N 85x,xxx.  Looks very nice.  He's asking $700.  Fair price?

With the heart of the rifle, the barrel, gone and replaced it's just a mixmaster.  I have one from CMP in that dark black greek park.  It shoots well.  If you want a shooter that may be the rifle but I'd try to go down from there by at least $100.

The greeks used the black park,  often pinned the floor plate with a brass pin to prevent loss.  Often you will see the stock and the bolt stamped with the last digits of the sn.  If those tell tales are present then it's a greek return like the hundreds released by CMP a few years ago.

A replacement barrel isn't all original. Request some clear detailed pictures from the seller.

He assures me that it's not a Greek import.  I will ask for some more pictures.

Replacement stock.  Standard O3 mixmaster.

Looking at the pitting on the receiver I would say it has been refinished . I am not up enough on 1903 values to put a price on it. But as stated above a replacement barrel is not "all" original

The stock and bolt look to be WWII era replacement parts as well.

Looks like a Commercial Controls replacement bolt. Rear Sight collar and rear sight are replacements. It looks like it's missing the front band screw.

If it headspaces, it's a shooter. $600 would be high retail IMO. It's nothing special.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I will pass of this one if we can't agree to a lower price.
