Working on a 1903A4 clone that I built from a rescued 03A3 sporter turned into a deer rifle it had the proper scope mount and original barrel which was bright and shiny.

After assembly when zeroing after about 20 rounds it patterned not grouped. This was using HXP.

Next day with handloads I was able to put 5 rounds into one raggedy 3/4" hole at 50 yds. This was from a cold bore.

Before I start shaving wood I'm wondering if this is due to the the wood to metal fit being too tight near the muzzle or something else.

This is the rifle.

Thanks

Your link for pics is bad.

I can't see but are you using a sporterized, shortened stock?  Is there any play in the barreled action sitting in the stock?  I ask about the stock because sometimes people try to salvage and re-use a stock that may have been cut down or doesn't hold the action well enough.

HXP is decent enough ammo, but its surplus ammo and realistically you can expect 3-4 moa out of it.  Its not match ammo.  Not surprising your handloads turned out to be more accurate and consistent.

No I put a NOS scant stock and hand guard on it.
I took it apart and saw that there was not enough clearance for the rear hand guard ring. I relieved this area and the action sits much better. Don't know how I missed that during initial assembly.
I also made sure that there was no wood to metal or metal to metal contact anywhere on the barrel forward of the receiver with the exception of the bottom front of the barrel at the tip of the fore end.
I'll see how it does today weather permitting.
