THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Thanks KB. Finally had a chance to take some pics of this training rifle. It is marked "40 V" and it seems to be all matching. Bolt, cocking piece, trigger, reciever and barrel "stub".
The story goes that Grandpa was in the invasion force that landed on Leyte in Oct 1944. He then fought through the Phillipines and became part of the occupational forces in Tokyo where he picked up this rifle. He said "It was the nicest looking one in the pile" so he grabbed it. I don't think he realized it was a training rifle back then. It had a bayonet with it, but my Dad broke it off when he was a kid playing "Army". Plans are to get rid of the ugly black stain my Dad put on it when he was a kid (he must have had BRD even before there was a BRD )
and somehow re-blue the in-the-white barrel with an "aged" look to it. Then it will go up on the wall. |

I have a few training rifles, some have mum's (usually these were repurposed 38's), most I have were made for training, cheap metal, smooth bore, etc. Markings vary by the manufacturer. Check on Gunboards, a few folks there can probably help with the ID.

It is a training rifle. Notice the barrel just in front of the receiver. It is a piece of pipe screwed into a sort of chamber section shaped adapter.
The Arisaka training rifle I had as kid was barreled in the same fashion and was also the best looking on in the pile when picked up by my neighbor. Except for the "barrel" and adapter it was made from real rifle parts as opposed to a cast receiver variant I once saw many years later. |

This one appears the same, not cast. I have re-assembled it and it will reside on the wall.
