My father was given a Cooper 57M as a retirement gift. I'm going to buy him a scope for it. My go to bolt action .22lr is a 77/22 I've had around 25 years and has a leupold VXII 2x7.

What's a scope more fitting of a rifle the came with a test target with a five shot group that could be covered with a dime?

I would suggest either Schmidt Bender, Swarovski Optik or Zeiss (Victory series). The particular magnification would depend on the rifles caliber and purpose. It is not unusual to spend almost as much for the scope as the rifle itself, if one wants to do things correctly (IMHO).
