Well dammit, I think I just got ripped off on some old piece of shit Ruger 10/22 Carbine I bought off some local classified page. I ended up paying twice what it cost new unfortunately!

I see this ad go up on a local classified page I scope out (no pun intended) from time to time. Ad is for a used Ruger 10/22 Carbine, also includes a scope and a leather case. Asking price is $100.00 dollars.

The ad is only two minutes old so I respond and say "I'll take it". I've been wanting one for my 7 year old daughter so hey, why not right? I setup a meet time and a place etc. Guy gives me the serial number so I can do a little research and I find that it was manufactured in 1966. Turns out the rifle belongs to a family friend. The daughter found it after her father died, she doesn't like guns and just wanted it gone. I've been looking for a used .22LR for my 7 year old so I figured why not buy it for her. ;)

So anyway I go to pick it up and obviously something is wrong with it because it appears to have never been fired. I mean I'm guessing it just doesn't work or something because why else would you not fire a rifle right? Anyway inside the box was the original sales receipt. The guy only paid $52.00 dollars for it new at his local "gas station". Man oh man did they rip me off! I paid $100.00d dollars! SIGH! Last time I buy something from a classified page, for real!

For real though... I believe they really had no idea what it was worth when they posted it. As I was doing research and speaking to the seller I disclosed it was worth more than $100.00 dollars. They honored the original asking price though as it was for my 7 year old daughter and I don't intend to ever sell it. I've been wanting to get my hands on an early 1980's or older 10/22 for years. No plastic crap-tasic parts. The receiver is machined, not pot cast bullshit. The wood is amazing quality! Did I mention it appears to be unfired?

It should have a slotted magazine as well, I might set it aside and get a modern mag for it.

Nice score.

Awesome score!

I bought my first one in the spring of 1978 for $75 and it came with the same soda straw Tasco scope.  That was the last year of the walnut stocked standard carbines too.

I had to google search that... Yes the magazine looks like it had a flat head screw slot in it. What does that mean? Why would I want a modern one?

Whatever a collector is willing to pay...?

If you go by any of the firearms price guides, about $300~350.00+ in VG (very good) condition but they are lumping 1964's to present together.

Looking on various forums, looking at other sold ads, people seem to be paying closer to $450~550.00 for something made in the 1960 if it has everything and is in VG condition. I'm pretty sure this ones unfired or at the most test fired and then cleaned right afterwards. I have everything including the original sales receipt of $52.00 dollars for this one too.

The year you really want is 1964, they only made 453 of them the first year.

You got a new gun for a hundred bucks, my first one was made in 1966 as well, my Dad gave it to me for Christmas when I was young and I still have it almost 50 years later and it still shoots with no problems at all, I can tell the gophers around my place are wishing it had problems.  I bet I have well over 50,000 rounds through this gun and I can't remember the last time I cleaned it, right now I have a factory synthetic stock on it and I upgraded the magazine release, but still have all of the original parts in the safe for it..

You did real good on a desirable gun for the kids.

HAHA right! ;)

The seller figured out it was worth more before the sale was complete but honored the asking price because it was for my 7 year old daughter. This was an older seller, I feel like most younger people wouldn't have done that.

Holy crap, that's awesome! I'd love to get my hands on a good condition older 10/22, not to mention an unfired one.
