Anyone know a good place to start for an oversized mag tube support ring(don't remember offhand Marlin's "official" part name).

I inherited a 97 receiver, and have fitted an early 39A barrel to it. The dovetail for the magazine ring is about .015 too big for the ring I bought on ebay, and .010 bigger than the base of the ring on the complete 39A I have. Well aware it's going to be an expensive build(I'm estimating $750 total for parts  plus rebluing), but due to family connection it's worth it. My grandfather gave it to me saying he thought it was what remained of his dad's gun. My plan was to have it built and give it back to him, but he died before I found a barrel I was happy with. Now I just want to piece it together into a functional rifle and have sources for most of the parts located.

Thanks for any tips, and when it's eventually done yes, pictures will be posted.

Try Numrich Gun Parts first, then Jack First if no joy.

Yes, that's where the current part and the barrel came from.

Here's some sources:

Jack First.  Possibly the best parts house of them all:

Just in case you're not aware of it, DO NOT shoot any High Velocity .22 ammo in your 1897.
Shoot ONLY Standard Velocity or the bolt will break.  Later 1930's Model 39 rifles had a beefed-up bolt for High Speed ammo.

Well aware of the no high velocity ammo, but thanks for the warning anyway. Looking like I'll have to fit a 39A bolt to it, I got the action without a bolt and 1897 bolts are just not out there.

I'd really like to know why it was taken apart in the first place-for some odd reason he had a barrel  and magazine for a Colt Courier with the Marlin receiver. Likely thought he'd be able to fit the two together but no way. Courier had a smaller shank and was pinned into the receiver. Too bad he didn't have the Courier receiver in another box, I'd have two builds pending.

Have gotten all but 3 parts either in hand or ordered. Down to where all I need is the forend cap, buttplate and rear sight. Starting to work on polishing the barrel and receiver, then off to refinisher and assembly. Hope to have the build done and pics up by end of May at worst.

ordered most all the small parts I needed from Wisners, couldn't be happier. Reproduction parts and everything fits.
