They do quiet it somewhat.
I used to buy 90 durometer urethane rod from McMaster-Carr and cut my own to sell at gun shows. Profit! |

Do either the urethane buffer or the kidd rubber buffer. If you get the kidd take the metal out first then install rubber and then once installed insert the metal rod in the center

Kidds are viton rubber over a steel rod. He makes great parts and has fair shipping prices.

I bought a cheap 3 pack of nylon buffers on eBay. The first one is still fine and softens up the action a bit.
