Something with 4x to 9x magnification (variable OR fixed). I am not trying to build a match rifle, just a solid plinker with an optics/rings/base combo that is easy to mount and will hold zero.

I like 2-7x30 variables for a 22 carbine.  Leupold makes a nice rimfire-specific one I have on my 22.  You can't go wrong with anything name-brand.  50yrd parallax is good for 22lr.  If you want 3-9, I'm also very happy with my Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40.  The BDC is nice to have on a 22 since it'll drop significantly 50yrds to 150 yrds.

Same goes for mount and rings - anything name branded properly loc-tited and torqued should be good to go.  I'd pay attention to weight as it'll be noticeable on a light gun.

Skip the rails and go low profile. Its a plinker so keep it simple.

These prices are though Optics Planet - just use their live chat to see whats available as far as discounted prices. Also, SEPT10 will get you 10% off and free shipping over $50 this month. Not sure if their under-MAP prices stack with a coupon, though.

DNZ Mount $50 retail, can be had for $37 before discount. Maybe $33 out the door?

Leupold VX-1 2-7x28mm Rimfire Retails at $250, $225 with discount then $175 after rebate. Or see what live chat will do with the OTD price.

Leupold VX-2 3-9x33mm $350 for the cheapest through $450 for the fanciest (custom turret voucher from Leupold to match your firearm and ballistics). Can't speak for the former, but the $450 is more like $395 after you talk to them. Maybe you can get an extra $40 off that with the discount.

Also recommend checking out the pic thread for some ideas on where mounts put the scope.

I too recommend the DNZ reaper mount. I got mine off of Amazon for $40 with free shipping. They are closer to $50 now on there ($48.63 to be exact).

if you decide to later add a heavy barrel, would suggest a cantilever mount off the barrel and not the receiver...the first year I shot the STC I had a Leupold mount on the receiver... loosened during the match, just not enough meat in the receiver (loctited)...I used Burris Zee rings to mount a Tasco 6-24x44 AO 1/8 minute dot and clicks... excellent scope for the money (1995)... a little overkill for plinking but worked great for the 90yd offhand shots... shown is a modified pistol mount on my STC 10/22... but we put Weigand mounts on the other team rifles

Leupold VX-1 2-7x28mm rimfire.  Well-built.  Decent for price optics, compact and light weight.  Great general purpose rimfire specific scope that will give a lifetime of trouble free service. Use low mounts.
