Went to a few yard sales on Saturday and found this for $100:

It's a Marlin 781 in great condition. Clean bore and the wood is in great shape. Woman sold it to me said she bought it for her husband. He said he put a couple boxes of ammo through it, cleaned it, and it sat in a closet for more than 30 years.

ETA: I've just discovered that the rifle was manufactured in 1975 (serial number 25XXXXXX).  Looks like the rifle sat unused for closer to 40 years.

Included was a very old rifle cleaning kit and 50rds of Remington Mohawk 22 Long Rifle High Speed ammo.

Good deal?

What scope mount/rings and scope are recommended for this rifle?  The top of the receiver has a dovetail for a mount.

Any older Tube-fed Marlin is a good deal for $100.00. I picked-up a 99C for the same price this past Saturday.

A Simmons .22 Mag 4 X 32 rifle scope in medium rings would be just fine for that rifle.

get one of those 22 to weaver scope mount adapters. Or the UTG ones. I have the kwik 2pc on a TOX-78 due to the rounded receiver. Use the UTG on the henry lever 22

Thanks, guys.

This is my second bolt action 22 since Grandpa gave me his Remington Targetmaster.

My kids and I have 10/22 rifles, but there's something about a bolt gun.

You will find (if the bore/crown is still good) that your rifle will shoot far better than a stock 10-22.

Tube-feds excel as hunting guns too. 15 rounds on board in a trim package.

You can also get a set of Uncle Mike's (or equivalent) sling swivels where the front swivel stud attaches to the feed tube. I have them on all my tube feds. They are around $15 to $20 shipped a set.

I've used this mount from Leapers on an old Marlin and it worked great.

The 81 series rifles are great! They'll feed shorts if that appeals to you. Should be super accurate.

FWIW, when I had one, I used Millet windage adjustable rings. The Weaver 2-7x rimfire scope would be great on that rifle.

Unless you need the clearance on a large objective belled scope that mount is right high and does not provide much in the way of fore/aft adjustment.

That said if you need a higher mount they are just fine. Very solid.

I prefer scopes mounted as low as possible.
