Why did all the .22 ammo fly off the shelves ? I really doubt that any branch of goberment is after .22 ammo.
The only thing I can see is a push for lead free ammo but I don't think that is a pressing issue at the moment.

This may not be the case in your town but in my area 40 minutes south of Atlanta .22 ammo is non existent at the moment...

Happened last panic also, and It's pretty strange indeed.

9mm, .45 and of course .223/5.56.   .40 is in supply everywhere, just as it was last time.

I think it's a combination of the Horders and resellers buying mass quantities, combined with the average scared gun owner buying a little extra as a security blanket.

It's fascinating to witness the psychology of each panic cycle.

Not all of it around here but pretty close. I did pick up some CCI .22LR mini-mag yesterday, first I've seen in 2 weeks.

I wished I would have bought out Cabela's Federal Bulk in 07 or 08 when I purchased 8 bulk boxes for 8 bucks and change each.

Sportsman's Warehouse was out of all bulk 22lr today.  They did have the CCI AR gimmick stuff for $25 for 325.  They still had 50 and 100 packs of the pricier CCI stuff.  They also had lots of .45 and .40, but no 9mm.  The guy at the store told me there were 75 people waiting at the door when they opened yesterday.  They swarmed and bought all .223 and 9 mm within 45 minutes.  They also had PMAGS, limit two per person and they disappeared as well.  They actually had Ruger BX25s in stock when I was there yesterday, but they went quickly.  I just ordered some 22 from cabelas.  They've got a $20.00 off a $150 order promo going right now.

.22 was running low here in the northern VA area at the beginning of the month as well .

In my mind it's because 22lr is the cheapest and the one that you can't reload.  BANG...... done,

Everything else, BANG...... pick up your brass to fight another day.

I have around 11,000 rounds.  I usually buy a brick or two whenever Walmart has it.

A couple weeks ago I ordered some through an online vendor. Of the stuff I wanted, at 9:30pm there were 72 cases available. By 11:30pm there were 60 left. I made my order at that time. The next morning I checked just out of curiosity and they were all gone.

I think everyone is building their stash in hopes of avoiding regret in the "I should have stocked up when .22 ammo was $25/500" or" remember when .22 ammo was .02 cents a round" threads in the future.

Our small club (in the UK)  buys around 80k of 22LR a time, just lead target ammo for the indoor range, which keeps us going for a little while.  When we went to replenish supplies a week before xmas, and found that wholesale supply of 22 target ammo had all dried up.  We are now rationing 22 ammo, as from report from the importers we will not get more until Feb!!!  They do make 22LR in Europe, but it is mostly high quality expensive target ammo.

The importers thought 22LR was not going to get hit by panic buying in the US, but it sounds like they are wrong!

Lucky there are quite few big manufactures of primers/powder/bullets in Europe, so we have no problem with supplies so we can reload centrefire at least!  I guess we might putting away our rimfire rifles, using our centre fire guns then!

It does tend to dry up a bit around this time of year as well, atleast in local stores. Lots of .22 rifles are sold for the holidays, and with those, you need ammo. That said, my local BiMart store was pretty well stocked in ammo, reloading supplies, and guns. Even running sales on them.

It's out everywhere here.  My LGS guys, who usually aren't prone to much hyperbole, said they had called around all of their distributors.  The find maybe one small case at a time.  They even said they called the Federal Factory and the factory was out.  If true, I assume this is because the factory only makes runs of certain kinds of ammo at certain times of year.

I have been stalking walmart daily here in NY for CCI mini mags with no luck. I used to buy full sleeves of this stuff with no problem, but now the shelves are empty besides a few overpriced boxes of 12gauge birdshot Next time I see CCI im buying them all

I was buying .22lr...when .22lr wasn't cool.

Glad I did when I did but wished I would've been buying when it was $8/Federal 550 instead of the $11.97/Federal 550 that I paid for most of my stash.  I tried to tell people that someday it would be popular since it was cheap to shoot and you can't reload it.

Same here.

Checked it out today.  Sportsman's Warehouse had like 8 small boxes of Winchester snakeshot and one 100 round brick of CCI 22 Short.  That's it!  Absolutely zero normal 22lr.  That means that even all the specialty 22lr they stock like the CCI green tag stuff is gone, too.  If Sportsman's Warehouse is out, I can all but guarantee that every Wal-Mart is also tapped out, at least all the ones around me.  Glad I ordered some online.  Unless everything starts getting restocked sometime soon, I may just start conserving ammo.  The thing is, I want to buy stuff to actually shoot and not horde it.  However, I also don't want to be nickel and dimed to death with inevitable price increases along the way.  Also, no 9 mm at all.

I wasn't into shooting in 08 and 09.  I had friends tell me about the unavailability of ammo.  Was it as ridiculous as it is now?

We have not had any decent 22lr at the LGS i work at since before Thanksgiving!

With that said I was well stocked on .22 before this and added a can of the mini mags a couple of weeks ago from wally world.

Yup.  Took about a year in my area to have normal stock levels again; some areas returned to "normal" faster than others.  It took until the end of 2010/2011 for suppliers to have the same readily available glut of parts and ammo that existed up through September 2008.

Looked in 3 differnet spots today, NSLGS (not so local gun shop) had mini mags so I picked up six 100rd boxes, He had more with other brands of .22LR also.

BTW, I also seen a 10/22 SS at Walmart no .22LR ammo though, almost fainted when I seen it. They also had three 25 rd Butler Creek mags.

At the CMP online store I just bought 5,000 Aquila Standard Velocity SP Centurion for $230, and 5,000 Aquila Target Golden Eagle Centurion for $305.  $46 S/H

Why?

Because I don't really want to dip into the relatively small supply of other ammo I have while still getting some trigger time.

They still have it listed, and they are pretty good about not listing things that aren't in stock.

Ammo to go has CCI mini mag bulk packs of 375 rounds with the Troy Landry "Choot Um" on the box.

Cabelas also had the same ammo in their recent sales flyer.

My wife used to shake her head when I'd pick up a brick or two when it was 7-9 $ a brick at wally world or Big-5. "Don't you have a ZILLION rounds of .22?"
I would tell her that it doesn't spoil ( especially in a seal- a -meal w/ a descant. And after a while everybody stopped asking "What do you want for Christmas, birthday ... I know ,I know,
a box or two of .22, .45, .308, 9mm......"
