I've been looking around for a set of rifle plates and I have it narrowed down but would like a few opinions on which way to go. Cost isn't critical but I don't want to needlessly spend. Looking for minimum level 3+, or anything that stops SS109/M855. Primary use for classes and SHTF so they're not going to be used all that often.
I have it down to the following:
All shooters cut, all triple curve as I hear that's by far the most comfortable. Prefer multi-hit rated. 10x12 size.
Spartan Armaply level 3+ steel, 8lbs per plate with full spall coating, $320 a set
bulletproofme ultra-light ceramic/poly 3+, 4.7lbs, $460 a set
bulletproofme light weight ceramic level 4, 6.7 lbs, $440 a set
My only experience is with an issued IOTV and medium ESAPI plates. I like the idea of the durability of steel and the cost but I'm hesitant on the weight. Will I notice the few lbs difference? I know temps can affect ceramic/poly plates and I'll eventually be moving back to the upper midwest where colder temps are a reality, however I doubt they'll be exposed much, and if they are they'll be on me and kept warm from body heat.
As far as a carrier - I'm down to either the Mayflower APC or the Crye JPC 2.0 - both which will fit any of the above plates well.
Thoughts?
