One wrong move and the dog gets it!

Seriously though, with how much packs come up I'm surprised there isn't a tacked thread for them.

I'll play along....

From R to L: 5.11 Rush 24, SDS USGI Molle II Assault Pack, Outdoor Products Hydration Pack, Outdoor Products something...

A lot of people will probably talk shit about Outdoor Products, but all the packs of theirs I've owned have been tough as nails. The hydration pack lasted through tons of hikes and is super comfortable. The grey one on the far right, well I've had that pack since high school maybe earlier (I'm 38 now). It survived daily use as a school bag (never used my locker), bumming around bag while skateboarding and hitting up punk shows and raves. It's been ran over, slammed while skating, puked in, pissed on and had countless beers spilled on it. The rip at the top didn't develop until about 5 years ago. I'm convinced it's the Danner Acadia of backpacks.

WTF do you guys put in these 65L or larger packs? Holy moly.

All of this fit into my Kelty Redwing 44 before I upgraded to a 58L Gregory pack...

Minus the shoes and rifle/chest rig obviously...

Yup...figure mine a 4500 ci ruck but I run the low pro lid. The top lid doubles as a funny pack etc. But once removed drops the cubes down to 33_3500 iirc . But I carry food...water...sleep gear ..shelter...thermarest...etc. ill run to top lid if temps are super low as winter gear gets bulky etc.

A SPC thankyouverymuch.  On the real, the luxury items seemed to only make the list for a very short period of time, before they no longer seem worth it.  After all, you have to carry that stuff, and a rip-it is heavy for very little benefit.

What are the shock cord holders on the back of your packs called?

ITW tac toggles and ITW cord locks.

WTF do you guys put in these 65L or larger packs? Holy moly.

All of this fit into my Kelty Redwing 44 before I upgraded to a 58L Gregory pack...

Minus the shoes and rifle/chest rig obviously...

Lots of food and water?

Somehow i doubt just that 1L would cut it for me.

Agreed.

A bunch of stuff is cool, until you run out of water an hour in or start freezing.  Mattyvac's singular water bottle is about 75% less water than I carry in my pack just for 6-8 mile ruck marches every thursday morning, its less than I carry for a normal excursion to the Zoo.

Even carrying a gallon plus of water I have run out before and become dangerously dehydrated.  If your bag is packed with any sort of survival undertone at all water should be your priority, not an afterthought.  Trust me, its way more useful than a shemagh.

It also depends on the area you are located. I live in AZ for a short mountain run I went on the day after xmas I still brought a gallon of water with me. If you are somewhere where water is plentiful and easy to access your number could vary but you could still be fine.

True, but I cannot think of a single location on this earth where I would want a ton of survival related stuff with me and only 1L of water.

Sorry for the crappie phone pic.
Voodoo Tactical Merced hydration pack.
Not really a backpack but I use it like small assault pack. Fits everything I need with enough webbing to add pouches and can also be attached to an assault pack or ruck.

I've started searching for a pack for hiking to a remote shooting range on a friend's mountain top property.  I'd like to be able to reach an AR mag or two on the side of the pack- is that do-able?  I want to make a mini-range bag/hiking pack.  Carry mags, targets, staple gun, water bladder, snacks, med kit, etc.  So I figure lots of MOLLE, maybe a few taco pouches on the sides, etc.  I have a pistol-only battle belt, so this would be do don for rifle work.  Recommendations?

MOLLE works well as it allows the pack to be set up "mission specific". There are several packs that will work for your specified application. Just be careful that you don't select the wrong pack just because everything fits inside. Everything may fit, but the pack may not bear the load well. You have a tank icon so you may be familiar.... The suspension system is extremely important. Weapon, ammo, stapler, staples, water are heavy items and will add up. You may be carrying your weapon to this location, but it's nice to be able to strap it to your pack when necessary.

Two options that I have experience with that meet your needs:

The USMC ILBE Pack can be had for cheap, but is in MARPAT Woodland if that's an issue. With the addition of green or coyote pouches the pattern can be limited while still retaining the camouflaging aspect. A pack cover can be added, but will also cover the mags that you want to access.

The ARC' TERYX LEAF TANGO is not in a specific CAMO pattern and can be found for around $300. Ebay has had quite a few of these recently.

If I'm reading your post correctly... in regards to accessing AR magazines rearward from a pack, I've never set up for that application as I've always worn a chest rig which allows direct access to mags while wearing the pack. The first thing that comes to mind is mounting the mags on the waist belt. Second would be placing a shingle panel/s high on the support side of the pack so that you can reach over your shoulder while still maintaining control of your AR (obviously these can be mounted on both sides of the pack as well as the rear).

Both are large packs, both will carry everything that you've mentioned well, both may be overkill (although there's no such thing...).

The CAMELBAK Motherlode and BFM (not to mention many others) may work for you as well depending on what/how much you plan on carrying.

Just some ideas off the top of my head.
