How much of a balance issue would I run into with wearing just a single plate in my armor? I have an interceptor carrier with IIIA soft armor front and back, and a small trauma/stab plate in the back.

I would be getting a cheaper (heavier) ceramic plate, and it would be ~8 lbs. If I used just this in the front, how much of an issue would I run into?

In a vest like the interceptor, I would say you would still have an imbalance issue but not as bad as with a plate carrier. Remember you have the weight of the plate in front plus your ammo. If you carry hydration on back it may help.

Couldn't you use night vision and check them? Or does light discipline prevent that?

There is one plate carrier that I know of that is specifically designed from the ground up to carry just a front plate.

Per Blackhawk down, (paraphrased), "You won't need a rear plate unless you are running away"...murphy can be a bitch at times.

Yep. We all know how well that worked out for him too.

(no disrespect meant, but I'd rather have two for balance and extra security)

My dad's unit was only issued one plate in Iraq during 03. He said they mostly put it in the back because they figured they could shoot someone who was in front of them where they were usually looking. You can't see people pop up behind you. Also as mentioned the ammo in front would off set the weight a bit.

This.

Thus why they were called back savers.
