Savage 220F

Fantastic shooting rifled shotgun.

I'd get him a 12 gauge, limbsaver, and use reduced recoil/law enforcement ammunition at the start. It will be a much more versatile gun that he can grow into, and a stiff 20ga load kicks harder in my opinion than some of the tactical type 12s.

For a dedicated slug rifle, rifled bbl w/ sabots.

I had a Benelli that was picky about what slugs it shot, but when I found them, it would cloverleaf 5 @ 100 yds off a rest (Hornady's, if I recall correctly - it's been a while).  Never seen another firearm that was as 'needy' about what went through it - so if you're seeing a rifled bbl shoot poorly, don't be afraid to try some different loads.

That said, if there's a chance he'll have to run buckshot, smoothbore it is.

What about Brenneke slugs in a 20GA. I've used them for years. I love the 20GA.

For recoil put a limbsaver slip on over the factory pad. Try a magpul buttstock or a choate synthetic with adjustable LOP.  You can get them pretty short.

my 21" Benelli shoots under 3" at 60yd with Fiocchi Aero 7/8oz reduced recoil slugs.... same point of impact as Federal LE 1oz reduced loads... I have 10/22 flip up sights and HiViz triangular light pipe front to get it zeroed

For an 8 year old I would go with a 410 slug gun.  That is not an easy thing to find, a 410 shotgun that will shoot slugs accurately with decent sights is almost non-existent but it can be done cheaply if you willing and handy.  Use Brenneke 410 slugs, best commercial 410 slug I have found.  Let him practice alot and keep your shots at crossbow ranges and a 410 slug gun can work very nicely.

I would also recommend low recoil loads.

Also remember within 50 yards the accuracy of the smoothbore will be fine.

Sounds like a good choice you made.

I have a similar 870 I use.  Mine has a 21in vent rib barrel and I have the choate stock with the spacers for LOP.  Mine shoots the green lighting Brenneke slugs great with just the bead. In my area 50yds is a normal shot distance.

You can always try the clamp on sights.

If your wanting to try a decent buck load. Try the 3in federal premium. It's buffered and has No.2 buck. It's no flitecontrol, but with a choke I got very good patterns at 35yds.  I'm sure if I played with different tubes I could stretch it to 45.

But you got a nice versatile shotgun.

And a light 20ga load will kick even less.  Also 20ga gun and ammo is lighter.  Talking about a kid here, weight is a concern.  I cover alot of ground when I hunt. Heavy guns never get used. Frankly if I could find a 3lb shotgun I would use it.

I don't understand the "grow into a 12" mentality. When a 20ga does 90% if not more of the hunting a person will do.
From upland to small game to turkey to waterfowl over decoys the 20 handles it fine.  And with today's advancements in shotshells it does it even better
