I of course have found some threads on take down guns here but have become fascinated with the design and machining of these interesting guns.  Most of the older ones have no disconnector, so they slam fire.  Many have features that you can see have evolved in some of the pump guns of today.  The fun part is they are really pretty cheap.

My first was a Stevens 520/Westernfield 30 in 12 ga. $150

Then I added the Stevens 620 (from an auction covered in black barbeque paint for $100)

Then, this week a Marlin M44 in 20 ga,  Built somewhere around 1933, and a Winchester 12 also 1933.  Both are cetainly worn...  both under $200.

You have all probably seen the Stevens take down attachment but I thought the Marlin and Winchester versions were pretty cool too:
Marlin 44- reverse threads.-takes a moment to screw it together.

Winchester 12- interupted threads, insert and turn 1/4 turn.

The Winchester 12 is certainly a fine ol' shotgun to have.  I have my Dads shotgun which I grew up on the farm in west Texas shooting rattlesnakes.  Still a good shooter.

Agreed - perhaps the fastest/easiest takedown for a pump shotgun.

I really like my Stevens 620 16ga. I keep it in a case very similar to yours, with a bando of slugs and buckshot.

I shot the Marlin today, just a function check.  It had a non operative safety so I tore apart the trigger group yesterday and it was gummed up with 70 years of gunk.  Still not a crisp snap, probably have to fashion a new spring.  It is similar to an AR detent so I imagine I can find something laying around.  The interesting part is that this gun has an inertia reset of the trigger so if you pull the trigger it does not release the slide.  It has a magazine emptying button as well as a slide release.  My sample has a poly choke on it.  I was thinking of chopping this down to 18" but I may have to shoot a few rounds of skeet with it first.  I will have to check with my friend if it can be remounted at 18".  I fear I have become infatuated with this little baby already.

I shot a couple of pics:
Poly choke, it has unusual grace.  Notice the machining on the top of the barrel.  Poor mans Rib.

Two piece bolt that rotates downward to follow the unusual lines of the receiver:

At the funshow today I saw a Stevens 520 "Wards Westernfield 30" in 20ga with about 25% finish left. It spoke loud to me but the $300 pricetag blocked my ears. I paid $175 for the 620 posted above and might have paid that for the 20ga.

I'm with you:

I actually have one or two more that I don't have photos of.  Take down guns are cool.

Now you need an ice pick, a trench coat, a driver and a 68' black Charger and your good to go.

Good stuff!  I just inherited my great, great grandfather's Stevens 620 in 20ga from our family's Appalachian homestead.  It was a bit rough when I got it, but cleaned up to be pretty smooth.  Finish is farm-worn, but that shotgun has a lot of history and was used extensively by each generation that has lived in the hollow since it was purchased.

This thread just reminded me that I haven't taken any pics of it yet.

I have sinned.  I chopped that M44 down to 20".

Nice!
No sin there.

I got a Skinner bag for my 12 a month or so ago.   Really like it.   Fits on top of my donut.
Very non tactical looking.

I am always on the look out for a 520. I have a few m37s and a Hi Standard Riot gun. I love those old scatter guns!

I love mine... Did some "upgrading" cut the barrel to 18" and also did this.

I'm sure you can see the advantage of the pin.

I have been looking for the "right" pin.  One with a ball detent and a quarter turn screw, if you get the picture.  I am sure I will have to make it.

If you can 3D print something you could make a simple plastic piece that would cover the magazine tube to keep crap out of it while stored and hold the rounds in. It would just need a small lip to engage the first groove that mates with the receiver. It might even just slide off as you assemble the front end to the receiver.

Check an industrial supplier like MSC. I used to get all different sizes of detent pins from them and McMaster-Carr. Traver's Tool is another great supplier as they sell alot of hardware for building machinist jigs.

Also try looking under house brand shotguns like "Montgomery Wards" "western field" if you are looking for a Stevens 520 or 620.
