That's part of the gas piston assembly.

I did find out an 870 mag extension fits on the threads of the V3 tube.

I've seen some people say they fit, and some say they don't.

Shouldn't be any issue using it without the retainer.

I really want to get this thing out to shoot it now.

Find a socket the right size to swage that dimple, grease it up and drive it in the tube.

What do I do with the spring retainer piece then?

Think they'd be any issue with the 2" of extra space for the spring?  I'm wondering i might need a spacer in there.

Ok google has helped me find several solutions to this problem.
First if swage the dimples to run the extension you need the old style retainer to run the standard cap. Yours may fit as I've seen that a few of the newer caps have notches for both kinds of retainers.

This is the old style retainer pictured with this wave style washer. I think the washer could be modified with a dimple to engage the old style detent holes if it doesn't work as advertised.

Here are options that have the detent built into a sling adapter, I'm sure there are more out there.

Or you can get a shorter +1 to run on it for hunting and the barrel clamp will keep it from loosening.

So far the threads are the same pitch within each gauge for 870/1100/1148 and 1187. so you can mix and match parts to get the configuration you like.

The problem with the detent sling mounts, is that it needs the corresponding spring loaded detent to match up, otherwise you won't be able to screw the cap down.

I was thinking about the wave spring this morning in the shower (I get so many ideas in the shower, but can never write them down for later ).  Seems like that should work.

I'm going to start a V3 specific thread.

Probably not, the spring goes most of the way into the new style retainer if I remember correctly. Function test after any mods are done though.

Well then that wave washer might be the way to go.

I haven't heard back from anyone with issues, but that's obviously a small subset of the world.
