As I cant seem to justify the cost of buying a Benelli M4, have been considering picking up a used autoloader to convert into a tactical shotgun. Was hoping to get some opinions to see what would be a good starting point. I have a Beretta A390 that I used for upland hunting, and I can get another used one for under $400. Problem I see with it is lack of too much in the way of aftermarket parts such as pistol grip stocks and mag extenders. Would have to have some things made customs. Its not an issue but would prefer to start with a gun that has parts redily available.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What makes a shotgun a "tactical" shotgun?

Have you looked at the Mossberg 930 SPX?  They can be found for $630ish.

Any particular reason youre looking at semi-autos? If a pump is appropriate in your definition of tactical, there are some sweet newish bullpup 12ga's like the Keltec KSG and the UTAS UTS-15. Both have AR15 pistol grips, top rails, and will hold more ammo out of the box than any traditional semi-auto with (non-xRail) aftermarket parts. The latter even has a built in flashlight mount and spot for light/laser controls to be installed. I think both can be had for like $700-800.

Actually, just prefer autoloaders. I have a 870 express that I've used, but always fall back to my a390. Have always liked the autoloaders better. Recoil seems less as well with my autoloaders.

By the time you convert a $400 field grade Beretta, you can afford a used 1201 or a Benelli M1.  A used M1 is an outstanding value.  I prefer versions that don't have rear sights mounted on the receiver but that is personal preference.  The coolest M1's are the 19" with choke tubes.  I could easily hoard that particular gun for no reason other then I like them.  A good deal on any M1 is worth considering.

I would check out the SuperNova as well.  I prefer pumps for defensive guns.  I have Benelli M2s for duck, quail, and chukar hunting.  They are great guns.  But, they do malfunction occassionally.

Renington 1100.  Widely available, very reliable, gas operated (reduced recoil) enormous aftermarket parts available, many of which are common to the 870.

Here is mine.  It started out at a 1970's vintage 21" rifle sighted improved cylinder barrel 1100 Deer Gun.  Added Speedfeed stocks, magazine extension, saddle rail, weapon light and sling.  I have a ADM QD mounted red dot that can be run with it.  Weapon light is tape switch activated and has been moved more toward the muzzle than in this older pic.

Beretta 1201FP is a nice one, and can be found cheap if you're patient. They're recoil operated and many of the parts will interchange with Benelli's M1 Super 90. They are light, fast, and have a pretty serious kick, though.

Interesting how it hits on every single detail... EXCEPT capacity.

ETA:  And not just the graphics above.  Even at the provided link it says nothing about magazine capacity.

Mossberg 930 SPX with the Mesa Tactical Urbino Stock on it. I love it. 700$ max.

The gun will literally run anything.

You can find used m1s for like 600.  Just be patient. Botach has some berettas but don't know which model.
