Got a 982 ordered thanks to all the good reviews and info on here, anyway I am left eye dominant so I have to shoot left handed. The only left hand 870 safety button I can find is plastic

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/463939/fortmanns-left-hand-safety-conversion-remington-552-740-760-870-1100-11-87.

I would rather not buy a left hand trigger group. Is there a steel version of this  I've missed from a different company? Can I flip and modify the right hand button? I've been searching for days.

I also have an older 30" wingmaster I would do as well, so even if I can't do the Hawk I still want to know my options on the wingmaster

Finally got a chance to take the old Wimgmaster apart, figured out I can't just flip the safety. Of course that would have been too easy! If only they had designed it with the detent in the middle instead of offset it would be easily switched back and forth, but I know ambi controls weren't a concern back then!

Push it the other way?

Not following you? Are you saying just keep using the right hand safety? I've done that for years with my 30" Wing master, it's very slow. With a Hawk 982 on the way that will be carried more than the 30" I wanted a faster left hand safety.

Of course eventually I want a 590A1 and a KSG, but in the meantime I'd like to make mine easier to use

I thought on the older 870 you could just flip it over. Newer ones I thought where different but I may have heard wrong.

I tried to flip it, it won't work with mine for sure, the detent ball is offset to the right so when I flipped the safety around it only engaged on one position and wouldn't move because the ends of the safety were hitting the detent.

ETA: hope that makes sense it's very simple in person, not so much to describe

That detent ball hole can be plugged and a new hole drilled off center to the left so the original safety can be flipped around. A little work required but it is possible.

Yeah I thought about that, I was just hoping for another drop in alternative, there is no reason one couldn't be made after I saw how it works, I would just prefer a quality steel piece over questionable plastic.

ETA: I was basically hoping I haven't found the good ones yet with lots of Google time but it's not looking that way

I use that Fortmann left-hand safety on my 870's and have not had any issues. Of course I'd prefer a metal one but I haven't been able to find one and this seems like the best/most readily available option right now.

I am left handed and haven't changed anything on my safety.  It is real easy to just curl my finger around and push the safety off.  I have gone forever using right hand guns, just adapt.

I have too but it's not as fast as a proper safety

Lefty here had 870's and just dealt with it. I went back to Mossbergs.

I've had the wingmaster for almost 10 years and it's still not as fast as a proper safety, I am going to try a Mossberg 590A1 someday. But I'll probably get a KSG first

Yeah I've gone that route before, still nice to have a safety since this gun will be bouncing around in the truck or on ATV's/UTV's, I'll carry it walking through the trees catching on branches and stuff. AD would be highly unlikely, but it could be a serious price to pay.

I am just looking for safeties, I've already got a  sentimental wingmaster and just picked up my Hawk 982 tonight! I don't like left hand ejection anyway, it's nice to see into the chamber, side saddles don't come in lefty form that I've seen, and I'm actually right handed so that's how I like to load it anyway

Might try the velcro side saddles for a right side receiver model.

Older 870s you could just flip it around. Now you can't. I have one of these safety's from Midwayusa and it has worked great. I've only had it for about a year.
