This is the one you did the rail on the forearm for then, eh? Looks awesome. Very similar to what I am going for. I want to do a vent rib short barrel though. This color looks great.

Thanks guys. I like how she came out. I have enough black plastic in the safe: I really wanted a return to wood and steel.
The wood isn't perefect, but my patience was running thin at the fourth attempt to get the stain to absorb in a few spots. A positive side effect of the whole deal is tha I now know how to disassemble and reassemble the 870 trigger group blindfolded. My first go-around I launched a carrier dog across the room. So I had to wait on Brownells to deliver a $1.50 piece of metal... Yes, the rail section is locked down tight. NoRoadtrippin: I really like the looks of a vent rib on a short barrel. Should I paint the Inforce light brown? The best part is that she's not going to be a safe queen. Turkey season starts tomorrow and deer in a few weeks. |

I gotta say ....NICE
I really like this , and it has me thinking about an old 12 gauge I have sitting around |

Personally, I vote against painting the light. I like the current look, very "function over form". The light says, "My shit works like it should!" and that you put your priorities in the right spot!
Either way you go on the light, it's a sweet setup. |

Goloud, do you mind telling us how much the cost was to thread the barrel for chokes? I want to do an SBS, but want to get the barrel threaded for chokes. How short did you cut the barrel? 14"? |
|
Not to steal the OP's thunder, but I had an SBS barrel threaded for chokes by Sumtoy Customs. They did a great job.
|

$175
But, that included attaching the front sight, and two rem-choke tubes that were $20 each. I felt the price was very reasonable, especially since the turn around time was less than a week door to door. Best thing to do is email him. Great guy to do business with. The barrel is ~12". I just put the barrel, sling mount and end cap together, lined everything up and marked the cut location with painters tape. Thanks for the comments. She's definitely easy on the eyes. Quoted:

That turned out very nice! Congrats op!
All of a sudden I find myself fighting an urge to go shopping for another 870. One I have is an older 21/2" only gun. If i'm going to sbs one might as well get a 3" mag gun. |
|
As far as projects go, the satisfaction level was high and the difficulty level was low. It's a perfect slow-burn project for that 870 that is sitting in the back of the safe collecting dust.
I sold off a 2 3/4" 870 to fund some of the parts. Quoted:

Seriously, that's one of the coolest SBS's I've ever seen. Also, don't paint the light. You have perfectly balanced the modern tactical shotgun with classic shotgun looks. And it's an SBS. |

Thanks for the compliments! I kind of wish the build wasn't over...
So, I'm currently looking for an old Browning A5 to do something similar. Always loved those guns. We'll see. Cheers |

Any chance you could post more pictures of the gun from different angles?
It really, really is a sweet looking gun.... |

Any chance you could post more pictures of the gun from different angles? View Quote Sure. I'll get some this weekend when the weather clears. Honestly, I could see Remington marketing "The Woodsman" as a consumer 870, SBS or not. And that's not based on any of my "skills" on this build, but just the Cerakote color and wood furniture combination would attract a practical/tactical type of shotgunner. I think the firearms industry as a whole is swinging back from a flashy/overdone style to a practical/reserved appearance for guns and gear. At least I hope so. |
|
I had a little free time in my mind this evening and got to thinking about how awesome this turn out and how having a Remington folding stock on this would make kit sooo much cooler.
Looks like arf has cost me another pile of cash. |
|
Yes, one of the top folders. I've heard they're uncomfortable to shoot. I don't doubt it, I've shot an AK with and underfolder and they're not a comfort king and they don't kick like a 12 ga.
But a top folder sure would make this a small potent package. And the looks would be off the scale! |

I love a wood stocked 870. They fit me like nothing else does. It's like Remington said "Let's build a shotgun that perfectly fits Bob." Not even the synthetic stocked 870s fit me as well. Although wood stocked 110/1187s do fit me well too.
25 yrs ago I worked in a gunstore and was able to shoulder all the new shotguns when they came in. Nothing, and I mean nothing not even the higher priced hunting and over/unders, fit as nice as any flavor of wood stocked 870. Throw the gun to my shoulder and the front bead was always sitting on top of the receiver. Everything else and the muzzle was pointed high. Some quite a bit. But then I grew up hunting pheasant with an 870, so that's probably where that comes from. Still, I'm an 870 man through and through. |

But with an old bolt action Mossberg hand-me-down. If you can master that gun, everything else is butter. |

That is just sexy...
I was never really interested in SBS's until I saw this. Great work man, seriously. |

And then I had a Cerakote epiphany. Seriously, the hardest part of the build was the waiting. Waiting for the stamp, waiting for sales of the EE to fund purchases, waiting for the stain to dry... But it was fun. |

Do you have any concern of the forearm cracking due to the screwed in rail?

View Quote I had the same concerns, and asked over in the refinishing section: http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_19/429274_Rail_section_for_wood_furniture.html In the end, the screws are small and I bedded the rail, screws and holes with JB Weld. Seems very solid. |

I subscribed just so I could use this as an idea when I go to build one. VERY nice. I am jealous.

What company makes the "inspiration" rear sight? And yours? I looked at Van Comp, no joy?

One of the original metal top folders? I was close toincluding one on this gun. But I remembered how unfriendly it was to shoot with. Plus I wanted more wood. (That's what she said). It would look killer, tough. Other similar projects for ideas: http://media-cache-cd0.pinimg.com/736x/c2/27/b0/c227b0693bf0218e38a2bc23f179b47c.jpg View Quote Two quick questions: Those are both 4+1 correct? The gun on the right, does it shoot low? This winter I am going to rig up a 3+1 and when all is said and done I expect I may need more than just a raised bead on it. |

Those other two aren't mine. I just found them while searching around.
But yes, the 12" bbl/tube will leave you with 4+1. Quoted:

I thought you were kind of going SBS crazy with 3 of them so similar!
I am going to cut the mag tube back to 3 rounds and move the barrel band, similar to what you see on an 870 Special Field. |
|
OP, that shotgun is hot.
I've got a couple of 870 SBS', including a factory 14" USSS model, and neither of them is as sexy as yours. |
