Today I completed the first phase of my most recent project.  A friend called me back in the fall and said he had some guns he wanted to sell and asked if I was interested.  I picked up an old Mossberg 835 made in the 90s.  It was a 24" slug bbl with rifle sights and in near new condition.  He told me he bought it new with the intent to try slug hunting deer(we live in a rifle state) but didn't like it so it sat in the back of his safe for years without seeing the light of day.  He told me he wanted $180 for it so I pulled out my wallet and came home with it.  I picked this thing up with the intent of having a do-it-all utility/defense shotgun for the panic times when 2 3/4 and 3" hulls can be hard to come by.  During the height of the panic here the only thing on anyone's shelves was 3 1/2" and it was dirt cheap.  I noticed this and decided to convert my new 835 into a 590 A-1 with a 3 1/2" chamber.  I called Mossberg and ordered an 18.5" 835 Security bbl and in 2 weeks it came in.  I was surprised and happy to find it was a heavy wall bbl. and looks just like a 590A-1 bbl.  I then set out to find a mag tube extension to fit flush with the new bbl but only found two, the Choate +1 and the S&J +2.  I wound up going with the Choate which is actually a tight +2 if you reuse the factory follower.  I also got an extended steel safety on evilbay and reused/modified a cheap ATI heat shield I had laying around.  This is the result so far.  It shoots great and is very handy and reliable.  I like it so much it has become my primary HD weapon(with 2 3/4 of course).  My future plans include a 590A1 heat shield, military/LE style wood furniture(Uncheckered stock/rat tail forend) because I love the wood and steel classic look, and a Meprolight bead night sight.  What do yuns think?  Is it overboard or practical?

Sorry for the garbage cell pics, my camera is OOS right now.

mic, I followed your build on SGW.  Mine is almost just like yours except Im keeping the wood furniture.  I like the old school Vietnam era combat shotgun look.  Your gun and build gave me the direction for mine, thanks!

Coolness.....I thought I had seen pics of yours somewhere! I sure do like the "Retro" look of the wood stocks.

As I recall I started my build back in 2008. I was originally trying to find a 590-A1 to use for HD, but they were few and far between. So I decided to convert my M-835. Shortly after I finished it, a 590-A1 popped up on one of the boards, so I snapped it up too. I tried a pistol grip on the M-835, but it never really worked well for me, so I got rid of it. I do like the fact that with the 3-1/2" chamber, I can shoot any type of ammo I come across.....

I built a 835-A1 as well.  Choate stock , fore end and mag tube extension.  Mossberg OEM 18.5 barrel and Heat Shield.
Here I a testing a 3.5 Turkey Load.  Apparently I wasn't holding it tight enough.

Im looking to change the forend to a more military/LE style and want to ditch the super long checkered forend.  I came across a 6 5/8" slide tube assembly on the Brownell's site specifically for the 835 so I ordered one.  Will advise of fit and function when it arrives.  I then went over to Numrich and picked up a rat tail forend to complete it.  I need to find a Mossberg heavy bbl heatshield now and I'll be where I want with it.  I noticed the new mag spring seems really weak the first two rounds in but it cycles fine even in odd positions.  I may get the Wolff spring and cut it down.  Anyone else notice this with the Choate extension?  I guess there's nothing really wrong with it but I don't really like how weak it feels.

Your 835-A1 looks good.  I like the forend too but I want to keep the wood furniture, I just like the classic look.

I got mine used at pawn shop. Came with 26" barrel and the 18.5. Also had green hogue furniture on it.  I sold the hogue parts and 26" Barrel on eBay and made enough to buy the black furniture, heat shield and mag extension.  :)

What is the Mossberg Part #, and Cost for the 18.5" Security Barrel?

I just got a "USED" 835 from a neighbor who is moving for $50 (no stock, barrel cut (bad) to 19.25").  It has the short 6" Forearm tube.  Question will a Standard 7" Forearm tube from a 500 swap-out without any issues?

Thanks ninjasteve, I like the wood furniture too.  It gives it an old school Vietnam era look.  I don't like how long the factory forearm is and the 7 5/8" action tube doesn't leave much room for the heatshield so I got on Brownells and found a 6 5/8" action tube assembly specific to the 835 which allows you to run any 500/590 forend.  Its part #631-000-294 and cost $31.  It came in a few days ago and I did a quick install to test its fit and function and it works great.  I wasn't sure if it would actually work because the 500/590 forend is about 1/2" shorter at the action bars and wont cycle the 835s longer 3.5" chamber.  After I found out it fit and cycled well I went to GPC and ordered a semi gloss rat tail forend to complete the military shotgun look.  Ive also got a garand web sling on it now and Im considering getting the S&J hardware bayo mount but Im not sure it will fit an M7 or M9 with the Choate extension.  Im also debating on wether I should get some US/Flaming Bomb arsenal stamps and stamp the receiver.  What do yuns think?

Chief,

First let me thank you for your service.  Here is the info I first got on this conversion and helped me decide to do it.  Be warned, when you call Mossberg the CS guys are a bunch of freakin retards and are not of much help.  I got my bbl in 2 weeks.  This is now my favorite gun and everyone I know wants one.
From ShotgunWorld.com:

"You cannot cut down an overbored 835 barrel because you cannot shoot slugs from it, so first order an 18.5" 835 security barrel from Maverick Arms: Item #12946, 18.5" cylinder bore w/bead sight, blue finish $110.00. The #12946 is a true cylinder bore, smoothbore barrel, NOT AN OVERBORED BARREL, and both slugs and shotshells (2.75", 3", and 3.5") can be fired through it." - FMD

mech4matsnova, Thank you.  And also, Thank You for the info on the barrel AND the caution about the num-nuts at Mossberg's CS.  I will be ordering a new barrel soon.  I had a NIW Blackhawk Spec-Op's Gen-2 stock on hand, and I wanted to put my older Surefire Forearm on it, but the forearm requires the 7 5/8" Forearm Tube, so it's still wearing the Checkered Wood Forearm.

I spent about 10 minutes (total) on the phone with Mossberg's CS, and ordered the 18.5" 835 Security Barrel & Heat Shield for Heavy Walled Barrels.
I even had Jonathan email an order confirmation to me before I got off the phone to make sure it was all correct.  Now I have to wait.

Chief,

How much was the heat shield?  I need one myself.  The ATI heat shield I have now works and stays put but looks cheap and Id rather have the Mossberg one.

ETA: I called Mossberg and ordered one.  Cost w/shipping is $45.  For those interested the Mossberg Part # is 16335, and its a Parked Heat Shield for Heavy Walled bbls.  Will report when it comes in.  Guess Im waiting too Chief.

The info on the Heatshield:

How much did you wind up giving for the barrel?  Reason I ask is on other forums folks reported different costs.  One guy paid $129 while I olny gave $94 shipped and we both received the same bbl.

The Barrel Part # 12946-------------$100.
The Heat Shield P/N # 16335P------$ 38.
Shipping---------------------------------$ 10.95
Total------------------------------------ $148.95

I asked if they extended either a Military or LEO discount's, but he said NO.  What could I do?  I need the barrel.

Also, my invoice stated that the parts shipped yesterday FedEx Ground.  I'll believe it when it gets here.

Choate +1 for the 835 (I don't want it to extend beyond the end of the barrel)   Mech4, is it the 4 1/4" Choate Extension I need?
GG&G Mossberg 12ga Follower
& Meprolight Tritium Dot

Am I missing anything?

I have been thinking about the Mossberg Ghost Ring Sight kit, maybe Over Kill?

Your 8835 Looks Good, I like!

I am going to go the wood look on my 590, 20" w/Heat Shield.  It's not a 590A1, but it does have the aluminum Trigger Group and Safety, but no Heavy Walled Barrel, AND a "US" prefix on the serial number. Came this way in the box!!!

I found a collector in Florida that has Complete Aluminum 590A1 Trigger Groups that he is selling for a "Very Reasonable" price.  If you want to contact him, email me. (I am not getting anything out of this, I just want to help fellow collectors)

Arty8,  My 835 Receiver is at least 1" longer then my 590 Receiver.  I don't think that you are going to get the 3.5" shotshells to feed properly.

Arty,
I don't think your 590 will run with 3 1/2" hulls.  My 835s ejection port is 3/4" longer than my 500s and as Chief stated the receiver is a bit longer.  You can run 2 3/4" or 3" through your 835 bbl.  The point of my project was to have a do-it-all gun capable of firing any available ammo and a bad ass HD gun too.  Chief- thanks for the contact info, I plan to order one this week.

Heat shield came in Saturday afternoon while I was at work and went on easy.  It fits and looks great.  I found an old Stevens 77E military style recoil pad in my parts bin and threw it on too.  I used the sling mount that came with the mag tube extension and got a Wilson Combat screw in sling swivel and hung an old AK leather sling I had laying around and got a good 2pt sling setup.  Only thing I'm waiting on now is the Meprolight Tru Dot bead and the aluminum M590A1 trigger assembly.  This is now my favorite gun and is the one that stays next to my bed.  I picked up a new project over the weekend, a 1897 winchester takedown riot.  Watch for a new thread on that project.  New pics to come tomorrow.

I've been on this thread, asking questions and waiting on parts.  Today the Brown Truck delivered some needed parts.  Mossberg told me the Barrel & Heat Shield will ship today.

Mech4, when you said "Welcome to the Heavy Metal Club", You really meant it !  This M835A1 is starting to put on the pounds !  I guess it's just got "Big Bones".

Here's how it looked when I got it.  A $50 Used mess, no stock, no stock hardware, But, I did realize that the previous owner did put a Mossberg Aluminum Safety on it.
It was manufactured in 2001.

I am still waiting for GG&G Mag Follower, and Meprolight Tritium Dot Front Sight.  Can't wait to get the Barrel & Heat Shield

Here's how it looks now, with Military style Buttstock & Rattail Forearm with Hogue Adapter/Spacer, and Choate +1 Mag Extension.

IIRC the receiver for the 835 and 590 are the same. I think you can swap barrels between them but not the 500 and 590. I have a 835 and it is a sweet gun. Shot all sorts of stuff with it with no problem. I have an extra barrel for mine I have been meaning to cut down but haven't yet. Will have to pull it out and see what I can do.

The 835 & 590 Receiver's, ARE NOT THE SAME !!!  The 835 Receiver is Longer.  Measure the Ejection Ports AND the Trigger Housings...
And now, some of the Newer 500's come with the CleanOut (Mag) Tube, just like the 590's & 835's.  Look at the ChainSaw Model, and some of the Models that have the Stand-Off ( Breacher ) Style Barrels.
