Looking for a general purpose field gun. I want a quality and warrantied gun, but don't want to spend $1000.

What are your recent experiences with the quality of the 11-87 Sportsman and Sportsman Field (walnut) models?

My sportsman has left a lot to be desired in terms of function. It's rather unreliable in its cycling of anything short of a heavy load.

It's not a skeet gun, so it's not the end of the world, but I'd still like to be able to cycle lighter loads without having to drill out the gas ports.

All in all, if I had it to do over, I'd probably not do it again.

Mine (purchased in 1996 or thereabouts) has been 100%.

It's gathering dust these days, though, as I like the Benelli more.
It's like putting on crampons and walking through a room full of puppies.

The 1100 & 11-87 needs field loads (1 1/8oz @ 1255FPS) to function properly. That is what it was designed to function with.

Its not a reliability issue.

I have an older 11-87 premier and it works great. You can only get it to fail one of two ways. Slow 1oz loads or not keeping it clean. As a recent convert to Benelli from Remington's you might want to check out the M2 American that is in your price range. Personally I can't say enough about the Benelli, it seems as they built it just for me.

Good luck on your search.

By heavy load I was referring to 3" and 2.75 high brass loads. It would not cycle heavy field loads.

That is a reliability issue

What length is your barrel, and do the loads meet the above requirements?
