THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Buy a new Wingmaster 26" barrel with Rem Chokes. $195 Buy a new Wingmaster 21" smooth bore barrel with rifle sights and Rem Chokes. $175 Have Guncat cut the factory barrel to 24-26" and add Rem Chokes. Probably close to $150 by the time all the shipping and packaging buying are done. Have Guncat cut the factory barrel to 20-22" and add Rem Chokes. Probably close to $150 by the time all the shipping and packaging buying are done. I am not an avid hunter but I have been known to go so I want to make this thing a little more versatile than just being a 30" fixed choke bird gun. I am leaning strongly to the 20-22" cut option. The thing that stops me from that is that the factory rifle sighted barrel will be close in price and it also has the Rem Choke system. Then even after I spend the money I have 2 barrels. |

Buy the second barrel. Don't cut the original barrel.

Don't cut the original barrel. Is the 30" barrel you have a vent rib or not? My old 30" wingmaster barrel is not a vent rib, and is too thin to cut and thread for chokes, based on what Guncat has posted.

Another vote for not cutting the original barrel. Another option is to find a used 26 inch Imp Cyl barrel.
If you want a chopped vent rib barrel, let me know, I have one around here somewhere that I'm not going to use. |

Mossberg also make Rem 870 barrels = I'd love to be able to find the cylinder bore, 24" rifle sighted version....

Since you do sometimes hunt and might actually use the 30", I'll echo all of the above re: buying a secong barrel... but I'll add that you can probably find a good one second-hand a lot cheaper, with a little looking and patience. |

I agree buy a replacement barrel, save the other
FYI - I saw CDNN has 12 gauge 20" Cyl bore 3" chamber barrels for just $69 I don't know the quality of these, but its a cyl bore shotgun barrel - How complex can it be? http://www.cdnninvestments.com/re87012cybod.html |

Well, I have another 870 but I just don't use the 30" Wingmaster. The gun itself is rather nice and has the desireable metal trigger guard but it has been used in the past and has minor scuffs and scrapes. It isn't a safe queen. I think most of my dislike from it stems from the fact that it is hard to put in the safe, it is cumbersome to carry and it just feels wrong because the barrel is so long.
I don't really want it to be a cylinder bore job. That is why I am looking at having the tubes installed. I may just buy the new 26" Rem Choke barrel and be done with it. |

Buy another barrel. The original barrel is a perfect waterfowl barrel, not designed to be walking around with, one of those sit in the blind with type barrels. A 26" would be much more manageable if you don't hunt waterfowl.

The 21in barrel and save the original so you can have both ends of the spectrum.

check your hunting laws, some places don't allow under 26" for bird hunting. keep the long barrel and buy a shorty.

I got a free wingmaster with a long barrel on it (not sure what length) with an adjustable choke on it. I liked the combo for shooting skeet at my buddies and I was the barrel I got with the gun. But like you I knew I wouldn't want to keep it. So I got the 20 barrel with rifle sights on sale at Cabela's which stays on the gun 99% of the time. But for the 150 or so I spent I still have the ability to do anything I want to do with a shotgun.

Yeah, I emailed GunCat and he wanted measurements to make sure the barrel would be thick enough for chokes but compared to my other barrels this one looks awfully thin. I have decided to leave the 30" barrel alone and try to find a different barrel. The 20" barrel with screw in chokes and rifle sights is a candidate but I also found a factory 20" polished barrel with bead sight for a bit less.

I picked up a 1971 Wingmaster Magnum at a local fun shop for next to nothing. It had a 30" non-VR Full choke (not screw in) barrel.
I then bought a "lightly" used Remy Express Magnum 28" VR barrel (with screw in chokes) off of GB, and sent it to GunCat for cut down, FO bead installation, and threading for Rem chokes. Here's the Wingmaster in original form with GunCat's custom barrel next to it for comparison.
And here's the Wingmaster with the new barrel installed, next to a Remy Express Magnum that has a 18" Police barrel.

OP,
Keep an eye on the Remington Country Store for barrel close outs. I got a new 21" Mossy Oak turkey barrel (camo, Xtra Full Rem Choke, fiber optic sights) for $75. Its now sitting on my 870. CD |

Well, in a follow-up to this I never could snag a rifle sighted smooth bore wingmaster barrel for a decent price but I think I have a deal worked out with a member here for a vent rib barrel. I think I am going to go for a cylinder bore vent rib 18" barrel.

30" Full barrels are common. 30" Mod is not.

Alright as promised the follow up is here. I tried to shop around for a 21" RemChoke barrel with rifle sights but they were all rather expensive. They were not out of my price range but for what they cost I could have picked up a cheap used riot gun instead. I also had no intentions of putting a bead blasted Express barrel on this gun. Warhawk got me fixed up with a Wingmaster barrel that had already been chopped once to 23" and had a slightly bad spot on the end of the rib.
I thought about it for a bit and decided that I was just going to make a short cylinder bore barrel. I cleaned the barrel and then took the dreaded Dremmel to it. After a few minutes of hacksaw, Dremmel, half round file, flat file and finally 600 grit paper this is the result. I have a front brass bead, correct bit and a tap so I can get the bead back installed. Does anybody have any pointers for a bead installation to prevent any headaches for me? The gun is drastically shorter and will probably make it out for a few range trips now. Here are some pictures. The 30" barrel beside the beadless 19" barrel.

Glad to hear that the barrel is working out for you. It had just been gathering dust in my closet for a long time.
