THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I am torn on if I should refinish the wood and make it truly a piece of eye candy or keep it as is with all that "character" What's the masses say?

I would leave it be as is.
I had a similar one in my car for years. It looked a hell of a lot worse than that but functioned fine. It has character. |

Leave it alone!
Is the rubber on the butt pad dry rotten? If so, replace that, but keep everything else the same. |

I just procured an 870 with police furniture that might need to be cleaned up a bit and I was contemplating this exact question a few days ago. |

Thanks everyone I think it looks "badass" as is but I know how elegant they can look. My Dad has an old police Wingmaster that he re-blued and refinished the stock and it's real nice looking.
Some of the stock battle wounds that I'm sure aren't very notticble from my cell phone pics are road rash on one side, department sticker residue, dry and cracked clear coat. This guy looks like a true trooper and is a prime example of what a tool is supposed to look like. The butt pad is a little dry... It is still functional and not totally done for just yet. If I can find a matching replacement reasonably priced I may nab it. 2 questions. Would keeping it as is raise or lower value/resell? And is there anything to apply to the existing clear coat to help keep from cracking in the future? |

i just got a stock set like that..i stripped it down though..its going on a retroish shotgun project im working on...i would probably leave it alone since its on the original gun...it doesnt have any "collector" value, its just a used wingmaster police, theres probably hundreds of thousands if not a million of em..

A shotgun of that era should stay 'retro-looking' as much as possible. Maybe add a Side-Saddle and some new springs, as well as a good scrubbin', but leave the scars alone.
Chicks dig 'em, don't you know?? |

I'll offer a differing opinion from what others have said and recommend refinishing the stock. The wood used on those old stocks is worlds better than current production and deserves to be shown off a bit. While the battle scars were well earned it would be nice to see it "dressed up" a bit. If you take the time to refinish it properly the stocks should turn out beautifully.

I doubt the 74 refers to the year. Most likely it is a number used for internal record keeping and tracking, so the full serial number would not have to be recorded every time it was issued/returned. Think of it like the butt number on a military weapon.
Contacting Remington with the serial number may get a more accurate response as to when the gun was manufactured/sold. |

lets see some pictures of the entire gun rather than close ups. I just want to see what she looks like.

great looking gun. I do understand wanting to refinish it. I enjoy working and tinkering on these things a lot. But I say leave it alone because it looks great the way it is.
