The new USM from the Mako Group is a sturdy, low-profile mount designed to work with most semi-auto pistols that have MIL-STD-1913 or Glock rails forward of the trigger guard. The USM is a streamlined, lightweight mount built from aircraft-grade aluminum. It clamps to the pistol's rail with a cross-screw, and has a bottom rail so that accessories may still be mounted. The top rail is a MIL-STD-1913 rail with 6 numbered slots. It is perfect for mounting compact or smaller optics to pistols. Unlike our GIS Glock Tactical Optic Mount, designed specifically for Glocks, the USM is designed to work for many pistol models. I will post more photos soon. In answer to the inevitable criticism that we get from people who see photos of this type of mount, this mount does not block the ejection of empty brass.

In the first photo with the Sig it looks like it is blocking the ejection port ?
Mako now I see and understand how it works IDK what I was thinking I guess just the visual without thinking about movement involved..... |

This is a result of a misunderstanding of how a semi-auto pistol works, or just not thinking about how it works, for those who understand it. Believe it or not, we actually have reviewers publishing written or video reviews of these products who install them, claim they are no good because they block the evection port, and uninstall them without every trying them. We get a lot of bad publicity for our stupidity in designing something that prevents the pistol from functioning.
Here is why it works:
When most semi-auto pistols fire, both slide and barrel travel backward together for a short distance, and the barrel unlocks and stops moving backwards. The slide continues backward, extracting and ejecting the spent case, before returning forward to chamber the next round. When the slide and barrel are in battery, the barrel is seen through the ejection port. When the slide moves to the rear, the front of the actual ejection port is just behind the part of the barrel that is visible when the pistol is in battery. I will take some photos and try to make a video. |

Every time someone says that, it cracks me up. I designed something similar so I could attach a grip under the front and have an optics platform, I made aluminum, and was thinking about titanium, and carbon; I don't have any carbon experience.
My version is lighter but takes up more real estate. Do you guys have anything that will work for an Springfield XD .45 Tactical? I'm interested. |

If you attach a foreward grip to a pistol you could end up in prison, unless you properly register the pistol with the ATF and recieve the appropriate tax stamp before adding the grip. Also, this mount looks pretty nice! |

The USM will work for an XD, but you would need to relieve the inside top corners slightly first. The XD I have tried it on was a first version (basically the same as the HS2000) and I can slide it on, but the top corners of the slide touch the inside of the USM. I don't know if it would create enough friction to affect function, but I would assume that it would. It would definitely wear the finish on the slide. |

I have not been able to find someone with the PX4 - The gunshops, of course, do not want me to be sliding things onto the rails of new pistols, and I don't have any friends with one.
Are you willing to try one? We can take it back if it does not fit.

Is everything for Glocks fugly because a Glock is fugly. This one looks nice and clean. The Glock one looks like they're building rafters around it.
ETA: I suppose it's because the Glock doesn't have a real rail and needs more support? |
|
|
Well, some of it is because most of our products are originally built to satisfy the requirements of a military or LE organization. What they specify is incorporated into the design.
The Glock mount is light and strong because it is made out of reinforced polymer, but this requires a design that is structurally different, since polymer can flex more easily. Also, the Glock frame itself flexes. The Universal Pistol Mount (USM) also works well on a Glock, and has cleaner looks.

Will this mount work on a CZ 75 SPO1?
If you think so, I'll give it try. VonB |
|
|
It should work. The CZ is a very standard size/shape. There is a lifetime warranty anyway. If it doesn't fit on the pistol, we will square you away. I haven't tride it on an SP01 yet.

Is anyone here using one of these USM mounts? Thoughts/comments?

A 9mm might expand to .45, but a .45 will never shrink to 9mm.
Good judgement comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgement. |
This thing is too narrow to work on my G21. It'll slide onto the rail of my G21 (barely, it's scraping the slide as it goes on), but as soon as I tighten down the mount on the rail, the mount puts a death-grip on the slide. Bummer, I was hoping this would work for me.

Interesting. Here is a photo we received from a writer with it installed on a Glock 21:
I wonder where the issue is? Could it be that the dust cover has a different shape? I have seen variations in the dust covers on some Glocks (some bend down, others are more straight). I don't think Glock changed the width of the slide, because we have not had any issues with fit in holsters, although a very small change could be unnoticed in holster fit. Regardless, there is enough meat on the mount that you should be able to slightly relieve it with a file until it fits. I can't send out our GIS Glock-specific optic mount because it definitely does not work on the Glock 21. |

Oh, you have the Picatinny rail version - that completely explains it. I did not even think about that. You should be able to take a round file to the inner radius at the top of the mount. You have to do this also for XD pistols (have not tried the XDm). I'm guessing that it should not require the removal of too much material. You should be able to remove enough material to make it function without reducing the strength too much.
Take it slow and neat and let me know how it works. I'll work it out as far as warranty.

Will this work with the older Sig SP2022's with the slightly wider picatinny rail?
|
|
|
Sorry to bring up an old post from the dead - but has anyone tried mounting this on a S&W M&P 9mm or a Springfield XDM 5.25 Competition in 9mm? If so - can you post pics? I'm really liking how the rail on this mount sits pretty much as low as possible on the gun and I'm ready to buy one if I know it will work on one or both of these pistols..
|
|
|
It is designed for in-spec MIL-STD-1913 rails. If you have rails that are dimensionally different, you would have to try it to see if they fit. As far as I know, there were three types of rail on this series of pistol, an original proprietary rail, a picatinny-type rail, and the current true picatinny rail. I don't think it would work with the old rail on the early models (pre-2022). Not sure about the older-style rail - I don't have one to try. It should work well on the new ones.

S&W M&P is will work fine. The XDm has a high rail to top of slide height, and as a result you will need to slightly relieve the inside top corners of the USM to clear the top corners of the slide. It touches on the corners just slightly - light enough that you can move the slide easily, but enough that it would wear the finish and might affect function. |

Just received this from a customer:
Just a comment on the USM mount. The product is excellent! I have used this on a Tanfoglio Witness Elite Match, a S&W M&P Pro and a Glock 35 . . . |

The MAKO customer support was good. I had to wait a little over a week for it to ship. I called asking about what the hold-up was after 5 days. I was told it was going to come in the next Tuesday and would be shipped that day. The next Tuesday when it shipped, they sent emails to let me know it was on the way with tracking information.
XD(m) &SOG by mhazelwd, on Flickr . . . works well. I also have the Mako mount for my G17 that uses the trigger pin as part of the mount.. . . . G17 Gen4 Mako mount/BSA RD30 by mhazelwd, on Flickr I got this one from Cheaper Than Dirt. I like it a bit better on the Glock. |
|
Whoops, wrong planet
|
Anyone have pictures of this on an XD? would love to see how much shaving needs to be taken off the mount. And if someone was running large sights if they would have issues with this.
|
|
|
Very little material needs to be removed. It just rubs against the top corners of the slide, which would wear the finish on the slide and could possibly create enough friction to slow the slide and cause malfunctions.

Great thread folks!
I have been doing some internet research on a scope mount for my XD9 Tactical. I waned something to install a red dot scope, but still keep my irons. And I really didn't want to spend a $140 for a Carver mount. Ran across a forum mentioning the Mako USM. Googled Mako USM, and here I am. I've posted threads on AR15.com previously, but dealing with AR15s. It looks like, with a little filing, this mount will work on my XD9. Love internet firearms forums! Tim |

Purchased for a Taurus pt92. Fits great, but the rail covers just enough of the ejection port to cause a stovepipe jam about every 10-15 rounds. Can be easily fixed by hacking off less than 1/2 an inch from the rail.

|
How about still using iron sights with it on?
