is there a disadvantage to buying the model with the internal threads that take the adapter? local gun shop is selling that model for $299.

I don't think you have a choice in barrels. I'm pretty sure they all come with the same barrel. They should come with the thread adapter also. Only the very early ones didn't come with the adapter. They did have the threaded barrel though.

My understanding is same 3.5 bbl, both threaded, but one model comes with thead adapter kit and other does not and has the cap and wrench.   I think kit alone runs about $40 from S&W.   Not sure if model with adapter kit comes with protector cap so it in essence becomes the other model until you want to add adapter
