I had one of my dad's friends call me today wanting advice on a 22 cal pistol.

He wants something to throw into his bag, and would like a capacity over 10 rounds.

I honestly couldn't help him.  My sister had a Buckmark, and I remember my grandpa had a High Standard, but that's the extent of my knowledge.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Well guess I am old school and say the Ruger Mark 2 which is what I started on. I know there are many pistols that are the same and a hell of a lot easier to clean than that and not sure what Ruger has upgraded it to. That Mark 2 is still a great accurate shooter. Just a bitch to clean. And again this is one at least 15-20 years ago. Guessing they have made it easier to clean since.

I don't know of any double  stack  .22 LR magazine in a handgun.

There are 12 rnd magazines for the S&W M&P22 but those are the only ones I know of.

He wants good, or capacity over 10 rounds?

The pre-AWB RamLine copy of the Ruger Mk 2 (and the Desert Eagle clone) had a double-stack .22" mag that held 15 or so.  All of those guns are over 20 years old now, and plastic w/ no parts availability.

Thanks guys,

I couldn't think of a pistol with more than 10 rounds, and I kind of figured there was a reason.

I tell him to take a look at a Ruger MK.  What about a 22/45?

10/22 charger - although it doesn't fit the typical definition of a pistol.

The 22/45s are great, so are the BuckMarks. Have owned both.

I'm digging the new S&W Victory but don't own one yet.

Advantage Arms conversion kits for Glocks have higher capacity mags than 10.  You can also modify the 10 round mags to hold 12 or 13.  I hace an Advantage Arms Glock kit I bought a Glock 17 frame to have a dedicated Glock 22 LR.  I also bought a Glock 26 frame for my AA kit to make a compact Glock 22 LR.

Another option seeing this is ARF.com is a AR-15 pistol with BDM 25 or 30 round mags or the redi mag adaptor and use S&W 15-22 mags.  Same goes for the Uzi or MP5 clone pistols in 22 LR.

The Colt branded pistols made by Umarex have 12 round magazines.  Mine functions well and is accurate.  Cost is on par with other .22 pistols.

Aftermarket followers/springs are available for quite a few popular 22's with 10 round mags. I've used these in SR22 and m&p compact they work reliably only downside you lose slide lock on last shot.

I really like my ruger sr22 I trimmed the floor plate stop and all my mags take 11 rnds I still just use ten but 11 will fit. Galloway sells +5 floor plates for 11$. I think 10 to 12 rnd mags are all you will really find in 22s there is no such thing as a good double stack do to the cartridge being rimmed and if there was they would prolly be to expensive. doesn't take much room for the gun 6.25" long 5" high and the ambi safety is around 1.25" for the mag the floor plate is around 1" wide 1.5" long and around 4.5" tall I through a couple in my pocket when I feel like taking a walk in the woods and popping a few things and I don't even notice them. I would worry more on getting a good reliable (for 22) gun rather than worry about mag capacity.

I'm lost on the thought of carrying around the 10/22 charger inless its a sbr whats the point. what does he want the gun for??? does he want a nice carry 22 or a big ass 1911 22 that has the same mag capacity witch I think is fine if you like 1911 and are broke or like to train on the 1911 with out 45acp prices. I found the sr22 is also very close in size to the springfeild xds and take down is easy. when I shoot 22 I shoot at least 150 to 200 rnds and always have to break it down and hit it with a brush doesn't even take a minute just knock some of the crud off not a detailed cleaning I carry a razor with my revolvers and have to cut the lead build up off the front of the cylinder when they get hard to choke due to the lead touching the barrel but cant complain id rather have a small barrel gap than a large one. the revolver holds 9 and I carry speed loaders only a little slower than a mag change but have a smaller foot print if space in a bag is a issue

You can get aftermarket followers for the GSG/Sig 1911 and the capacity goes to 14.

If you can live with the standard 10 rounds....

How much better is the S&W Victory than the Ruger Mk 1/2/3 or the Browning?

S&W victory...I find it ugly as sin but bought one anyway because I needed/wanted a suppressor host now.

Honestly...compared to the Ruger MK series, right out of the box I find it to be a better shooter.  The grip feels a lot better in my hand than the rugers I own, and the trigger far surpasses the ruger triggers.  I am not saying the victory trigger is great, just that it is much better than the stock ruger trigger.

Then he wants a Ruger SR-22 long or short barrel.

Extremely reliable with any ammunition and more than accurate enough for plinking and taking small game.

My wife 's has been exceptionally reliable right out of the box and she's got 2400 rounds through it so far with absolutely no issues.

I'd suggest he gets it in black though.

Ditto on the SR22.  As mentioned earlier the mags can be modified to bump it to over ten rounds.  Also available in threaded or unthreaded barrels.

As one who owns a PMR-30 I can tell you the reason why they don't make double stack mags, they're complicated. Kel Tec did a nice job of making a functional mag but it's not easy to run rimmed cartridges in a double stack configuration. Loading is tricky and if you don't do it right, not 100% reliable.

I'm assuming if the OP is asking about a good .22 pistol he's not interested in .22wmr. It's a fun caliber but more expensive and harder to find.

As for a good .22 pistol, the Ruger mark series have great triggers and good aftermarket support. I've got a mk I from 1964 that's a great shooter. The SR22s also have a solid reputation for reliability. I've always liked the Browning Buckmarks but haven't spent much time shooting one. The S&W M&P .22 also has a good rep.

If I didn't already have an older High Standards Sport King I'd be taking a close look at the S&W Victory, reviews look good and I like the 'vintage' styling.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I spoke to him the other day, and suggested a Ruger MKII/III.  He let me know that he was interested in the Kel-Tec Pmr-30.

Hopefully he gives me an AAR, and I'll post it here.

Thanks again.

They make replacement springs/followers for the M&P22 compact magazines that allow it to hold 14 rounds. I plan on getting one or two and giving them a try.
