The .22 1911s are totally foreign to me (never seen one in person) and don't know what this pin is or what it does. He said he took it to the range and noticed after shooting it that the pin was gone.

I believe it's the barrel retention pin. Look on pg. 54 of the Sig pdf.

It's supposed to be inserted and removed from the left side of the pistol.  When installed it's covered by the slide stop so to prevent it from falling out.
