I do agree there is a floor under which you do not want to go, if long term durability and service matter.

Nice used S&Ws can be hard to find, and in that regard a new Ruger SP-101 is an option, and $200-$300 dollars less expansive than a new S&W 617.

The SP-101 is not a bad option, but most folks will probably want to replace the hammer and trigger return springs to lighten up the trigger pull.

Ruger also still seems to be having some QA issues.  My SP-101 went back to Ruger twice with severe leading issues before they decided it was "non-repairable" and replaced it with a new one from their latest production run. It was a painful six month process, and I'm still out $72 for shipping after Ruger lost the receipt I enclosed with it.

The irony here of course is that with the extra shipping expense, and a new set of springs to lighten the trigger pull on the SP-101, I'm within about $100 of what a S&W 617 would have cost me.  With the lighter springs, the trigger on the SP-101 is a fine pistol, but it's not shooting at the same accuracy level as an S&W.

I'm not a fan of cheap guns, revolvers especially.  I'm looking forward to the soon to come 10 shot Ruger GP100, that should be a sweet gun but until then my newest .22 revolver is doing it's thing really, really well and looking great doing it .

Yes. I have a 617-4 no lock that has a 10rd cylinder. Picked it up used recently in great condition and well south of what I've seen anywhere lately.

Yea baaaby.  I am waiting for the gp100.   Gonna be pissed if I have to spend the coin getting a full under barrel lug milled off though.

I picked up a beautiful S&W  K-22 and a H&R  676 6" this past Saturday. Both guns are in outstanding shape and look to have sat around instead of being shot. The Smith is a 1958 5-screw. Just learning what these guns are all about. The trigger when in single action is possibly the finest I've ever felt. No movement just steady pressure.

Hey guys, I ended up buying a very nice, used H&R 939 with a 6" barrel. I've always been wary of less expensive handguns but I was very impressed with the quality and materials of that H&R. Nine shots, double action, adjustable target sights with a vent rib, all steel construction and nice looking walnut grips for well south of $300. To top it all off it's 100% Made in the USA. Much better than a Taurus or Rossi would have been IMO. This was a later model 939 with the transfer bar system. Delivered it to him today and hope he's pleased.

I was going to suggest the 999 sportsman. I wish I could find one with a 4in barrel

I use a Charter Arms Pathfinder target model in stainless steel with a 4 inch barrel and has the blued adjustable rear sight. I painted the front sight as it was a little easier to see it that way.

Mine is a 6 shot model, but they now come in an 8 shot model. I noticed that the website does not show the combo or 8 shot version, but I have had them in my classes and at the local gun shop.

They are available in 22lr and 22Mag and a combo model with extra cylinder is available as well. Mine shoots very well and I use it for beginner pistol classes
and as a loaner for new students.

Price was a lot less than the Ruger, the Smith and Wesson and a few others as well, and the fit and finish was very good, and the trigger on mine feels better than all but the Smith and Wesson.

And I have seen way to many problems to ever buy a Taurus.

If I had the cash I would definitely be owning one of the new .22 GP100's.  Although I'm not sure if they have been released yet.

Have one just like it!  Twins!  I swear, more people fall in love with that thing than any other firearm I let them shoot.  My wife has claimed it as hers.  Can't believe the guy let it go, but hey...who am I to stop him?  Got it for a pretty fair $375 if I'm not mistaken and wouldn't sell it for double.  1000s of enjoyable rounds fired.  Just had it out today with a buddy who asked if we could shoot.  $1 if you can guess which gun he said he was going to buy.

Oh...and the best part of the day with that bad boy?  10 yards standing and I shot off the head of a Q-tip with bulk Winchester no less.

Does that single six have a stainless grip frame fitted? Or was the aluminum grip just stripped and polished?

Either way, it looks sharp.

Thanks,
It's a stainless grip frame that I fit to the gun back when Ruger would sell them to anyone.
I don't think they will do that any more.

I like my single six I bought a couple years ago.  I didn't know at the time they made a single 10.  If I were to do it again I would get the 10 round instead.  Otherwise, it's a nice gun.

S&W Model 617

I had the same dilemma this year and after stalking a few 617's and drooling over one Diamondback on GunBroker, decided I'd save some money and try a 6" 917 Taurus Tracker in blue. I grew up shooting a 6" Colt Diamnondback my father owns, but they are stupid expensive. I swapped out the rubber grip for a hardwood one and I love it. Lockup is tight and DA trigger has very little creep (ok, compared to the Diamondback it's no where near as smooth). It's a hoot to shoot and I recommend them to anyone with a $350 budget for a good used .22 revolver.

My father-in-law came to me about finding him a .22lr revolver to replace one that he gave to his sister and was subsequently stolen. He has a very nice S&W 30-1 .32S&W revolver that he wants to use to trade with. After seeing that there isn't much demand for anything in .32 S&W it seems about the best I could hope to get out of the Model 30 would be about $350. So, finding him a S&W of any model in .22lr is pretty much out of the question. I've looked at the Charter Arms Pathfinders and the Ruger SP101. I would lean toward the SP101, but it is still fairly pricey. I'm also open to a used gun so long as it's good quality. Double action is preferred, but single action is also OK. Minimum of a 4" barrel. I'm not a fan of Taurus or Rossi.

If I could pull this of by Christmas it would be even better. Recommendations please.

I respectfully suggest an H&R Sentinel as a fairly inexpensive DA 9 shot .22 worth much more than the sum of it's parts. They are a largely overlooked and written off .22 revolver. Many different versions were made.
I have an R-100 3" that has been a fun shooter and that the Mrs. keeps handy in the house. They have an aluminum frame so I use standard velocity ammo for plinking and load it with Stingers for the Mrs.
Massad Ayoob explains their attraction better than I. Get on down to the gun show.

https://www.gundigest.com/gun-blogs/books/gun-review-the-sentinel-22-revolver

And a review with more history/info:
"The innovative design was completed by Harry Sefried, High Standard’s young design engineer, in a mere six months . . .  The gun, like the Broomhandle Mauser, is screwless but for the grip screw.

Sefried went on to work for Ruger, designing the 10/22 rotary magazine among other things, then became their chief engineer.
