I bought one of the new SP101 .22LR 8-shot revolvers last year. It's a heavy little gun. First thing I did was sand/smooth the knurls on top of the hammer. It was raw from the machine shop and would impale/shred your thumb. So I smoothed down the mini-spikes and it's much easier on my thumb now. I don't know why Ruger didn't put a wider thumb pad on this hammer (like a S&W). My 101 cost $515. I haven't shot it enough to give you a decent range report. Accuracy is decent enough. It is basically a "kit" gun, to go in your hiking backpack I guess.
My 10-shot S&W 617 cost $670 and the extra $150 gets you a much better pistol. The double action trigger pull, overall fit and finish, and beauty of the Smith is much better than the Ruger. |

I got my Single Ten right after they were annouced at Houston Gunshow. I still see at least a couple for sale at each show. I have yet to see one of the SP 101s and if I did I would buy it. Same goes for Ruger's 1911.

I got a Ruger SP101 in 22lr a few months back. I have many Rugers and am kinda disappointed with this one. . This gun has such a heavy trigger pull; I almost want to sell it. I have several S&W 22’s including a M41, 617-1, M17-3 and several Ruger single sixes. Compared to them this is just awful.
I took it apart and polished everything. It helped some but it still have a really heavy trigger. I keep telling myself that I just need to shoot a couple of thousand rounds thru her and it will all smooth out. |

Have you considered playing with the main spring and rebound springs? I have had good luck with my Rugers by trying slightly lighter springs. |

Get an SP101 spring kit from Brownells or MidwayUSA and replace them. Makes a difference. |
