Here's a thread dedicated to 1911's, with a few pictures of mine.  It was made in 1917 originally for the civilian market, but the government got it somehow.  My grandfather got it in 1945 in Germany.  I'm not sure where it was between 1917 and 1945 but the finish is well worn.

1916 Colt Commercial, shipped to L.I., NY

Bought and used by my Great Uncle in WWI.
Burned by mustard gas the first month he was there and sent stateside.

My Uncle served in the 1st Marine Division in WWII.  RR'd in Australia and fought at Guadalcanal.  He used the Colt handed down to him by his father.  Did not speak of his experiences until many years later.  He was also stationed in Korea and he brought the pistol with him there.

When he passed on in 1993 the pistol was stored in my Aunt's attic. I inherited it last year and detail stripped it.  There was still sand and grease in the extractor tunnel!

It is not the prettiest nor expensive old Colt commercial out there, but its priceless to me.  I still have the original grips and screws, but the wood is fragile and I don't want to make them any worse.

Wow, just wow.  This might not contribute to much to the gun part but I'm waiting on my Grandpa's DD214.  He was a Sergeant in a rifle squad, I believe, Killed in St. Lo area.  He might have carried a .45.  It's hard to say.  Sure makes me want one though.

That's a beautiful family heirloom Derek! I've been wanting a 1911 USP for a long time, just got this one yesterday. A 1917 vintage with a little bit later slide, by a year or less.

I have an old, pitted Ithica 1911. It was one of those returned from overseas during the Reagan years. After some minor fitting and polishing, it became 100% reliable. Not a single hiccup in over 1K rounds! Eats whatever Papa feeds it.

Yeah, your bluing looks too good to be that old.  Either that or someone really took care of it.

To my knowledge it's never been refurbished but I have no conclusive way of proving that one way or the other. It came from an Old man's collection that was sold off after he died to a gun shop (you all know the story). The slide is stamped for GI service, but the barrel is obviously not a commercial barrel, it's a Hi-Standard barrel. I've been told that the gun falls into the correct serial number range to have been bought by an officer in WWI then likely that officer would have put a GI barrel in it and kept it as his own personal sidearm. It does have some wearing on the front of the slide though if you can see it. It also has the takedown scratch. It's faint but shows up real well on pictures. Oh well...
I have some additional pictures of the markings on the inside. I haven't got a clue what they mean.

Here's mine. Inherited it on my birthday last week. It was my grandfathers. Colt 1911 made in 1918. It's not all original but it's a great shooter at almost 90 years old. Got some weird slide markings on it.

1918 on top, 1917 well worn with early 1912 slide on bottom.  The slide on the 1917 has a later sight that appears to be original to the slide(ie witness mark).  Otherwise 1918 is original finish and 1917 is refinished with all WWI colt parts except a 1930's Springer barrel.  I have no idea where the 1917 was refinished as it was reblued and no arsenal markings, then well used again.

I've posted these pics before, but this is a great thread and I have to get in on it.  You all have some real nice 1911's there!  These are really amazing pieces of history.

1918 mfg date.....The grips are Korean war era I think, the originals are lost unfortunately.

Those are really nice collectors.  Makes me jealous.  My five year old camera is fixing to be replaced and I am in a quandary as which digital camera to get.  I've looked (on the net) at Cannon, Sony and Kodak so far.  Any suggestions from some of the posters above would be appreciated.

Some consider Robert Maplethorp an artist, but that doesnt mean I have to like it. And no, I have never been jealous or envious of his subjects.

BTW - Personal attacks are against the COC.

So is trolling in the tech forums (non-tech thread notwithstanding).

I don't have a dog in this fight and I certainly don't like a lot of offerings posted in some of our pic threads, but there is a difference between a constructive, neutral criticism and some inflammatoy posting. I would say that was unnecessary to make the post, and if you had to make the comment there would have been a more appropriate way to do so. My $.02

According to the production numbers, there weren't any 1911 handguns produced in 1925, period.   In fact, according to the numbers, there weren't any straight 1911s (not A1s) produced after 1919.

I have a matched 1919 RemUMC so I've kind of dug into the older models a bit more than most people.  What kind of markings are on the frame?  Maybe your gun is older than you think!

Good luck finding the matching slide.  I've been trying to find a matching complete RemUMC for mine, but the pocketbook hit would hurt too much.

Shoots Great, eats whatever it's fed. Needed a little tweaking from Colt out of the box, but their work was flawless.

My 1917 era 1911.  It has been to the Augusta Arsenal and kind of unfired since.  Early frame with a late slide.

By looking at the pictures it would appear the frame is a 1911A1.  The back of the grip is arched, there are tapers for the trigger finger and Guy H. Drewry was a WWII inspector.
