I'm in the market for a decent used 1911 chambered in 45acp as the only 1911 I still have is an older Colt Delta Elite.  Looking to spent around $700. Ambi features are desireable as I shoot left handed but I don't mind finding a good basic gun to use as the start of Build.

Until about 2005 I shot 1911s regularly and had a Colt Series 70 Gold Cup, a Kimber Target II, and a Kimber Pro Carry II at various times.  Since then I have not kept up to speed with makers, models, etc...

Any suggestions?

Edit: limited experiance with Springfield, Para, etc. but not apprised. I'd prefer American made.

Don't worry about used. Get a new Rock Island GI. Just got a new one for 439.00. They will eat anything, lifetime warranty.

In that price range, I would look at Desert Eagle or Ruger. I have the commander model in both. Desert Eagle is the most accurate handgun in my arsenal.

For used in your price range, I'd suggest a S&W E-series SW1911 if you can find one.  Doesn't have the ambi-safety but its a hell of a pistol for the dough (or lack thereof).

This! They're great guns.

I think the Ruger offers the best value in a 1911 right now. I owned several Loaded Springfields many years ago. They were decent pistols, I know they have changed quite a bit but my biggest bitch on them was they handled like a box of razors. Taking a high round count pistol class was torture with those guns...

Norinco 1911 + Novak sights.  You'll still have some left over for mags and a holster.

Used for $700?

SIG, S&W, Colt, or even Kimber.  I would consider a SA RO but I've never been impressed with their Loadeds.   The ROs tend to have a better barrel fit.

Ruger makes a decent 1911 too.
