I am looking to purchase my first 1911. I want to go with a 9mm. I have narrowed it down to 3 options. I know an older man who was in the 160th NightStalkers. He is a 1911 fanatic. I will be dropping off whichever gun I choose for him to go through it and fine tune/fit parts. Which out of the three would you reccomend?

- Remington R1 Enhanced 9mm: I like the looks, price is good. Is it reliable?

-Rock Island Tac Ultra Full Rail 9mm: I love the look of the full rail. With this being the cheapest, is it also the worst performance category?

-Springfield Range Officer Operator 9mm: This one is the most expensive. I like the looks of the other two better but is the performance of this one worth the higher price?

I'd go with the Springfield. Better resale value over the RIA or the Remmy.

I don't guess Im too worried about resale value alone. Especially since the Springfield is roughly $200 more.

Also, would the Rock Island fit in an STI 2011 Kydex holster?

My vote goes to the Springfield.....For the money I believe its the best bang for your buck even with it being more than the other two....Fit will be better....Forged NM frame, forged slide. Not to mention their CS is top notch. If I were looking for a production 9mm 1911, this would be my choice.

Your gun your choice but I am somewhat surprised that more folks are not beating on you to get a 45acp for a first 1911

9mm is a great round and the 1911 is a great platform for it. Not that 9mm is hard to control, but the 1911 takes recoil management to another level in 9mm. I'm currently saving for a Wilson Combat and am still 50/50 on whether I want 45 or 9mm. Of course I already have a 45 1911.....but who says one has to come before the other?

Range Officer Operator without a doubt, I just picked one up and am very impressed with it

It is just as well built as my old TRP, and it's hard to beat for the price

It wasn't on your list, but I'd consider this too.

While the quality on the RIA is not bad for the price, my vote goes for the Springfield...

A 1911 in 9mm is very pleasant  to fire all day long, young and old, man or woman...

It also is considerably cheaper to shoot vs .45 ACP...

Good luck.

Of the three mentioned the range officer hands down.

Of your 3. Choices I would go SA but my choice based on my sample size of two would be colt

Those are a hell of a bargain, GB has several for ~$800

I was very tempted to buy one, but I wanted a rail

My next 1911 will be a 9x19 and it will be another Springfield Armory with some ED Brown and Wilson Combat parts.

Well now people have made me aware of a new option.

Springfield and Colt seem like the favorites. Which one between the two?

Of the options you listed, I would go with the Springfield.

This is just my opinion, but I find nothing extraordinary in current day production Colts that sets them apart from other manufacturers, that would demand the price increase, other than their name.

The Springfield is still the better option in this comparison. Again, just my opinion.

+1 on the Springer. The Loaded was my first and I was hooked. I have a Kimber and Colt as well by really enjoy my Springers.

I used to hate 1911s -- never liked any of the ones I had shot.

On a whim, I bought a Springfield Mil-Spec, and have since become a convert

Another +1 for the springfield

Though in retrospect I'd probably just get the non-rail version as I can't bring myself to abuse this thing as I'd like to be able to with a defensive gun

Springfield Range Officer 9mm obviously.

You can do whatever you want with this gun, and you can usually find them for a pretty good price.

If you decide to go with .45 don't discount Magnum Research either.

Ed Brown Alpha Rail.

SA Pro.

Get one.

Screw the rest.

Springfield Armory...

I own a 1911 Range Officer in .45ACP (As Browning intended!) But I also reload so .45ACP. 9mm is more affordable if buying it off the shelf and softer shooting, as well as I think they hold 1-2 more rounds. I'm completely happy with mine other than wanting to at some point change out the locking main spring housing for a non-locking version. But I have been so pleased with it in all area's that I haven't done so yet.

If you have the $$ Colt or Springfield Armory would be my top choices, especially if resale is a consideration.

I own 3 Springfield 1911's and have sold 4 more. They are great guns the only thing I see wrong with the range officer is I don't like those Bomar style rear sights. IMHO I'd grab a loaded with a set of Novak style sights on it if you plan to carry it.

Oh, and I'd get one in 45acp too. :)

I'd say Springfield Armory Loaded model.  Great price, great pistol.  Worthy upgrades over a GI build.  Can learn what you like and don't like...and even make those changes yourself or send to SACS later on.

Why would one's first 1911 be in 9mm?  Blasphemy.  Meh. It's your money.  Get the Springfield.  You'll be happy or they'll make you happy.

Another vote for Springfield Armory.

Get a loaded model in .45ACP

I'm not wholly against 9mm 1911s, but you should get a .45 first.

I've bought four of them.

One of those was a wedding present for my best friend. (His wife knows the disease and was okay with it.) He doesn't shoot as often as I do, but he LOVES it, and someone asks to shoot it every time he goes to the range.

In my opinion, the Loaded SA is the best 1911 on the market as a mid priced pistol.

STI Tactical. You said you liked the full rail.

I'd go with the Springfield. I have the parkerized loaded model in .45 and am eyeing the Range Officer Champion.
