Looking at getting my feet wet with a 1911 purchase...any input or things to look for?

Don't have a CZ Dan Wesson.  Have a Dan Wesson 1911 Razorback in 10mm.  It is one of the original 150 Razorbacsk made.  Shoot it a little and look at it a lot.

I highly recommend the Valor. I have a stainless Valor and it is one of the nicest, most well built 1911s I have owned and I have owned Colt, Ed Brown, Kimber, and Springfield. It has 4300 rounds on it and it is still as tight as the day I bought it.

So is it safe to say, the DW are considered semi-custom with quality parts and tight tolerances, no mim parts etc?

No MIM. Dan Wesson makes most of their own parts now, too.

Keith DW is a big wig at Dan Wesson.

Nice!  Is it worth the $300-$400 premium over the Heritage?

I've owned various Colts and transitioned to Kimbers (better buy for comparable Colts) over the last 28 years. I upgraded and spent the money on a Night Hawk Custom a couple of years ago and it is the best 1911 I've ever owned. After reading a lot about the CZ DW 1911 pistols I decided to give them a try and just purchased a Silverback 10mm Blemished model ($375 discount for the cosmetic blemish). I have to admit that I'm really impressed. It fills the gap nicely between the Colts/Kimbers and my NHC as far as quality. Whereas I was afraid to carry my NHC because of the price and only carried my Kimbers, at the price/quality point I will be carrying my CZ/DW Silverback. According to CZ/DW website the Valor line is their top of the line and the Silverback is made to the same quality at a lower price point. Their prices are very fair for the quality that you get. And they are better than the Colts/Kimbers in quality. The only misgiving that I have is that they don't offer the Silverback with a light rail. Besides a magwell (that I have already ordered), there is nothing else I would add (other than the light rail). It comes standard with adjustable night sights, match trigger, and match barrel. This is a very nice 1911 at a very reasonable price.

I'm really impressed with the Specialist I recently purchased. I've owned a Springfield RO and TRP previously. Fit and finish on the Black Duty coat finish model rivals the Wilsons and Nighthawks I've shot. Good deals on the blem models on gunbroker. I feel like the higher end DWs are 85-90% as good as the higher end semi-customs at roughly 50-60% of their costs. Costs/quality ratio sweet spot for me.

My wife and I have two. Mine seemed to have some teething issues at first, but I switched to Tripp magazines and I've had no more issues. Hers has never given any issues.

I would recommend them.

I love my Heritage and carry it once and a while. Eventually I'm going to send it off to get a little more aggressive of a bevel and checkered front strap.

Only reason I went Heritage over Valor was the old school rib on top of the slide and standard Novak style sights.

I have a DW Valor and CZ1911. No problems with any ammo or mags I've run in them.

I have a pre CZ Pointman Major and it was always a great gun ,but after Gary Reeder in Flagstaff AZ worked the gun over it is outstanding in every way and has a 3# smooth crisp trigger with a great reset .

I have a CZ1911A1.

Love it.  They've been discontinued, but you can still find them.

The safety is very tight initially, but mine broke in, same with the slide release.

Very accurate, very smooth, and not yet a failure of any kind in 500 rounds.

Was planning a stainless, likely valor.
Saw on the 1911 forum they scratch easily.
The duty coat is durable but high.$

If your worried about scratched surface, do not get a stainless gun. This isn't a DW thing, it's a stainless thing.
Duty treat isn't a coating, it's a metal treatment(melonite). It is super durable and protects even if the color wears. 100% worth price of admission.

They are considered production guns....however, I consider them the best production pistol you can get before 'stepping up' into semi customs.

No MIM parts from what I know in DW's however I believe some select models have some cast parts in low stress areas....however don't quote me on the cast parts...

They're good to go in my book.

Been shooting Kimbers but had the chance to fire a DW CCO.
Convinced I need an ECO or CCO now.
That CCO was like a natural extension of my arm.
Good luck with your purchase, has it been made yet?

I have these two

Not as impressed as I was with my cco vs the newer more expensive Valkyrie
They are good $1000-$1400 guns more than that you can do better

I like and prefer stainless steel. Since it is not a coating or surface addition like bluing or Parkerizing you can polish it and polish it as often as needed. I have polished several of my stainless pistols (a 1911, a Sig P229, and a S&W revolver). I haven't dropped any of my pistols so far and I don't hold my pistols while walking through thick brush or foliage, I haven't scratched any of them. They stay in my holster when out and about and come out when I get home. I carried my Sig Stainless Elite for several years on duty/off duty with no scratches.

Now they do show fingerprint smudges from the natural oil from your skin through normal handling. I just wipe that off with a soft cloth. The great thing is if I ever did accidentally scratch one of my stainless pistols, I could just polish that out in no time with a soft cloth and Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish. If you polish stainless steel up to a mirror finish (I've been trying to do this with my Sig  P229 but can't quite seem to get there polishing by hand) you will see very minor scratching from holster wear. But, again, this very minor scratching will easily buff out. I recently purchased a CZ DW Silverback and plan to try and polish it to as close to mirror as I can. I may have to resort to a buffer to get there as I still can't seem to get there by hand.

The only non forged/barstock parts on my CZ1911A1 are the slide release and the grip safety.

I have plans to replace those with Wilson Bullet Proof parts in the future.

Love mine.  They're very well put together and fit tight.  The chamber is extremely tight though and it chokes on handloads that will run in my CZ

Can't speak highly enough about the Specialist

Can anyone confirm what dovetails these use?

I'd love to nab a specialist, grab some tripp cobra mags and preferably a 10-8 rear sight with a dawson F/O front.

Any chance a 10-8 rear will fit?

I believe the fixed rear is Novak and the adjustable rear is Bo-Mar. The front is Springfield.

I have a Valor, and ECO in 9mm, both have been 100%.  Shooting my Colts and Kimbers much less nowadays.  I've sold a few of my 1911's, the DW's are all I need.
