Keeping it short and to the point: im looking for a <$2k, full size, steel frame, railed 1911, that I can stake my life on.

I have no idea who does them right, ive only shot 1911s enough to know that I shoot them well, and to know they can be finicky

Springfield Operator.....You'll have money left over for ammo. PM me, I know a guy...

Basically, any $700+ 1911 can be smithed into perfect operating condition -- 95% of the time without changing any of the original parts.
A condition worthy to trust your life on; after you have put 200-1000 rounds of your SD/Carry ammo through it without out failure.

Polishing the feed ramps gets rid of the very vast majority of the FTF (a.k.a., stove piping)
This takes 5 minutes with 600 or 1000 grit wet/dry sand paper wrapped around a dowel with some oil lubrication.
Having high quality magazines gets rid of the other FTF syndromes.

A bit of work on the trigger ($~100 smith fee) and it will fire as good as any new gun on the planet.
(It takes me about 1 hour with my tools, files, and stones)

A bit of contour work on the ejector and the gun is finished.
(10 minutes with a jewelers file set.)

+1 on the Springfield Operator.  I chose the LB operator over the MC, as the LB comes with a mag well and 8 round mags instead of no mag well and 7rd mags with the MC

Colt rail gun is also a viable choice and with shopping around for 2k you could get two of them.
I have the m45A1 and am very happy with it $1650 at my local shops )

SA Loaded Operator or MC Operator both good options.  TRP Railed is another good option if budget allows.

Be very careful messing with any of the parts in your 1911.  Many barrels and feedramps have been screwed up by people not knowing what they are doing.

Agreed on the careful part.
Many (many) 1911s have been converted from a "failure to <anything>" useless piece of metal into a reliable companion with a little home smithing, too.

I'm just going to say this.  Modern pistols in your price range shouldn't need you tinkering with it.  You are more than likely to screw it up than "improve" it.

And I agree the Springfield TRP would be my choice.  That or a Dan Wesson.

RRA still builds 1911's although not very many.  Go over to the Rock River in the industry forum and do a post seeking RRA Steve.  He can give you the information you seek and will have answers for you in short order.  If I had 2 more K to put into another 1911 this is exactly what I would do.  Never owned one, only handled and shot one on several occasions.  For me, this is my last dream gun......

Either the DW Specialist or TRP, both are thoroughly solid choices, neither has any major advantage over the other so pick whichever looks prettiest...I'd get the DW....

The bigger question would be, if you don't know what you're doing, why do you think a full sized, railed 1911 is the best option ?

How much more is a Pro Operator?  The Warren is nice, but the Pro is for sure a higher end gun.

I would love to find a current price/wait list for SACS catalogued models, but can never seem to find one.

Is there such thing as a Custom Carry Operator?

Personally, I'm currently lusting over the newer Colt Rail Guns with the dual-recoil spring setup and beefed up rail like what's on their M45 Marine Corps pistol.

Then again, I don't like the bushingless bull barrels on many 1911s, such as the TRP operators.

The Pro comes with or without a rail, I have one of each and a third unrailed on the way.

No such thing as you describe, but SACS can probably build you one to your specification.

They built my weird ass 10mm...
