They are cool to turn into a shooter WWII/A1 clone, but as a base gun the Mil Spec is a better starting point IMO. |

Fo for sure, that's probably the best price I've ever heard. Paid $499 for a used one and love it.
Edit: Saw you said G.I. it would still be a good pistol for what you want. |

A budy of mine bought one and let me shoot it. It had a short trigger and it was awful to shoot. Good starting point gun for the price but needs a trigger upgrade for sure.

I would buy if I were in the market for one, most guys seem to ask $550-575 on the market around here.

Do it. Get a C&S 5 piece ignition set, properly fit barrel bushing, and 10-8 rear sight. You'll have a good truck gun.

Seen here? http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/32592 a guy I work with wants to get rid of the one listed for $400. Says he shot it once. Fo? I have a Springfeild 1911a1 and a few others. but do I need this? No. it this a deal? |

I had one and don't miss it in the least. While I appreciate the aesthetics, simplicity, and nostalgia, I simply did not enjoy shooting it. Tiny sights, dinged up brass, hammer bite, uncomfortable grip safety, etc. While all those issue could have been fixed it wasn't worth the time and money IMO.

The MilSpec has a lowered and flared ejection port, beveled mag well, and high profile (kings hardball style) sights. |

I was referencing what I had done to my Mil Spec, and forgot about the different front sight on the GI. |

The GI was discontinued a couple of years ago. Great gun. Sights are invisible. But, just like a Mil-Spec -- which has less invisible sights -- you'd want to do something with the sights on a "non-A1" Springfield if you intend to shoot it much.
That's a good price if the gun is in excellent condition. |

I really like the G.I. for a basic blaster.
They look like shit with the ejection port lowered because of the rollmark placement, so I don't like them for custom buillds. |

I have a soft spot in my heart for GI guns. My first 1911 was a Springer GI, which I stupidly traded away because I couldn't see the sights. If I ever find another one for a decent price, I will buy it.
