I want a 1911 and nearly ordered an Elite Commander by Para..  Good reviews and felt good when I handled one at a local shop.  Then I found out that Para had been bought out by Remington--read Freedom Group.  Poor QC, poor customer service, etc.  Publicity all pretty bad.

So, what's the best 1911- prefer Commander size-for $600.  Not looking for pretty, just dependable and passably accurate.

Probably.  Citadel is also made by ARMSCOR.  Taurus would be right behind.

Used Milspecs can occasionally be found for less than $600, but you have to be quick, as they've been increasing in popularity lately. But, yeah, for $700 you can find a Springfield Loaded 1911 pretty easily.

Springfield ROC. Range Officer Compact. Either 9 or 45. They are great guns and carry Springers lifetime warranty. The best customer service in the industry. The best custom shop in the industry. Outside of Alchemy of course.........can't go wrong. You will spend just over $700 bucks.

Did I tell you I own 6 Springfield's? And four Wilsons and three Les Baers oh , and a C&S..

The Champions are pretty common on Gunbroker and don't seem to go for as much as the 5" guns either.

STI Spartan can be had in that price range.

My Spartan has been great once I ditched the OEM mag.  It runs very well with Wilson 47D and Checkmate 8 round extended mags.  It's the most accurate pistol I own and is a pleasure to shoot, to the point I'll drag it along to 3-gun matches even though it is not competitive for that type of game against double-stack 9mms.

I agree.  I own SA, Colt and RIA as well as Ruger.  For $633, I got the Commander.  It's not a $3,000 pistol, but I'm not an expert shot either.  Wear it 3-4 times a week, don't worry about dinging it and shoot it monthly.

x2.  Love mine.  Got it very slightly used for $579.  Decently accurate, reliable, 4.5 pound trigger.

+1.  Mine is nice. Great shooter. I got it a Palmetto State last year.  They were under $300 with the $30 mail in rebate.

Don't dick around with a RIA or para, get a springfield or colt.

The Ruger's are really good for the price range. The Rock Island's are pretty good for the money. I personally would like a springfield armory loaded in stainless or phosphate finish.

I just got a used S.A. range officer  for $599. It left the factory Feb 14 2013. It looks great has some handling / holster marks but the barrel looks almost unfired or someone did a really great job cleaning it. I soaked copper cleaner in it  and the patch came out clean. No trace of copper or led.
It came with the factory holster and mag pouch and hard case. But did not have the key for the built in lock. I sent S.A. an email asking about the key. With in minutes I had a reply saying package was going out first class today. They even let me redgester it. C.S. was great.

So if you are on a budget do not over look a used S.A. yes you will pay more then some of the budget clones but you will have a better handgun

Don't go with RIA; they're cheap junk. Some of them shoot fairly well out of the box, but don't "look under the hood".

Yes, good, used, mil-spec Springfields can be found for under $600.  I've had a few go through my hands that cost less than that.

Also, a good Colt's 1991 can easily be found under that price point.

These are the only two to consider IMHO because of the durability of the frame and the security of any investment you put into upgrading the gun.

Eschew all others.....

I'm also going to chime in for the Ruger SR1911CMD.  I have owned 1911s for decades.  Love'em, but this is the first one I've ever owned that I really couldn't find anything on it I wanted to upgrade.  As someone else has already said, it has everything you want and nothing you don't.  The only knock is the relatively crappy 7-rnd factory mags that came with it.  But you're going to buy quality mags anyway, right?

I was gifted an RIA GI model, and after break-in I started modifying it to suit me better. Had I bought it myself, and knowing what I know now, I would have sprung for the RIA Tactical, or maybe the Match. That being said, my lowly RIA has been perfectly reliable. I run only Checkmate hybrid-lip magazines for carry, though Checkmate GI mags work perfectly fine as well.

I'd go Ruger as well, impressed with my friends for the price point
