what is the purpose, other than looking like someone slipped with a belt sander?

They think it is easier to conceal, less sharp edges to poke you

You can't lop as much off an officers model sized frame. That's the best you can do.

A bobtail will bob your wallet as said.   I never cared for it after shooting one.  A little off the corner is OK,
but that much is too much

Maybe it's just the size of my hands, but I fine a bobbed Commander length doesn't feel like it recoils the same as regular frame.

Probably not enough of a reduction to justify the price tag, but it's there.

Also it does carry a little better, and that corner doesn't dig into me on a bobbed frame.

It does help a little for concealed carry as that corner is what normally will print first, but not worth the extra dime to me.

Check out J.Harrison's 'Round Butt' pkg.
I really like the looks, and it does look like it would keep the frame corner from gouging the old kidney.

I hated the look when they first came out. Then I bought one (Ed Brown LW Kobra Carry) that had it & shot it. It does fit the hand better, IMO. As already mentioned, it does also help on the carry printing & gouging.

There's a lot of things *I* don't like about some mfgr's 1911s. I tend to simply not buy them.

It's to hide better. The round edge blends better under a shirt than a standard grip

As others have said, mainly for concealment. Have met a few guys who prefer the feel. The current level of popularity is a fad, I think.

How can that help conceal? Won't the mag be sticking out in that space anyway?

Only if you are a wee laddie, I conceal a regular 1911 Mexican carry

I've seen a few of us who would be able to conceal a howitzer.

Didn't like it when I first saw it. Then shot one and it started to grow on me. Ended up getting a Ed Brown Special Forces Carry. Now I'm a fan.

Ever carried a 1911?  That corner of the frame prints like the dickens.

Bobtails are a sin against JMB and 1911's in general.

My EDC is a Colt LW Commander.  It conceals fine and the grip doesn't need mutilating.
If you think you need a bobtail you're doing it wrong.

I have no desire for a bobtail but if someone likes them and I'm not paying for it then go for it. I wouldn't agree that it's wrong as the choice of a carry gun is very personal and sins don't enter into it. I carry a Colt CCO and JMB didn't have a hand it those either but I find it hard to think he would disapprove.

If I wanted all my 1911's to be identical to yours I would be using glocks. I have a dozen 1911's  and have one bobtail, just something different and I do like it.

This. Have carried same for decades without the need for that mutilation.
Each to their own, I reckon.

I like the way they handle, plus they conceal nice.

The work is easy to do yourself. No need to pay $200.

Yeah, starting in 1968. If you like the looks, fine, but if yours "prints like the dickens" you may have to rethink your carry setup.

I agree, but I do think there is a benefit.  That corner can have a tenancy to stick out at times.  I don't have one, but I can see the utility of it.

Do you actually care, or are you just complaining?  Based on the language you used it seems like you don't care about the function at all, only the form.
