In this film, Josh Brolin uses a found 1911 to stop an attacking pitbull shortly after crossing a river.  Before he shoots the charging beast, he clears the gun, blows down the barrel, then chambers a fresh one.  Is this necessary?  I thought that this pistol design was reliable, even around the water (WW2 and Vietnam).  I just wanted to know what the experts think about this.  It's been twenty years since I fired a 1911.

Probably didn't need to do it, but certainly made sure he didn't have crap in his barrel.  Gave him a measure of realism to those who don't have any experience with pistols.  Beats the crap you normally see.

I liked it.

1911's are pretty useless with a bulged barrel.
I was always taught to drain the water out of my M4A1;that is a really reliable gun (until the barrels is ruptured).

Barrel blockage could happen with any barrel (less likely with a .452" but it could happen). It is basically a straw.

He was a nam vet, he saw some action, he knows the manual of arms and that he might have an issue if he doesn't clear the barrel. so he does.

Thanks for the answers guys. I know its just a movie, but I enjoy the Cohen brothers films and I wanted to know more about what I saw him do..

In the future, I will be sure to clear my barrels if they get dunked..

didn't he do a press check when he found the money and the dead guy under the tree?

IIRC.... in the book it was a 38Super....which makes sense if the gun came from Mexico.

I thought it was a great book,....and a great movie.

Cinematic effect.

All you gotta do is point the muzzle up and pop the slide outta battery enough to let the water run out.

All you actually have to do is hold the barrel pointed down for a second, or you could 'sling' it just like slinging water out of anything. It made no difference to chamber a fresh round because they were all under water the same amount of time. Besides, ammunition is basically waterproof, at least for such a short period. but it certainly added tension and excitement to the movie to go through that meaningless drill with the dog charging.

1. love the movie
2. I like the scene, and thought the barrel clearing added some realism to the movie. At least it showed the character knew firearms well (which wouldn't be a shocker for pronghorn hunting Texas Vietnam Veteran).  Which beats the pants off character shooting pistols with bottomless magazines or guns that click every time you touch or move them.
3. If anyone disagrees, it's a movie.

I've brought up that seen on here before my self. I had noticed how when he picked it up he cleared it and carried it hammer down. He is supposed to be a vietnam vet and people pointed out that that was the way the military trained back then, so it was actually pretty detailed.
