So I decided that it is un-American for me to be without a 1911, and have been wanting to pick up a "nice" one. I thought I was pretty well set on the trp operator (wish they made a stainless with rail!) but came across the S&w performance center and was curious if anyone had experience with both. I admittedly don't know that much about 1911s, but it seems both would suit my purpose of range duty as well as being a nice gun for the collection. My main concerns are accuracy and complete reliability. Any input is appreciated! The rail is more of a want than a need, I know the pc doesn't have that option.

Colt and Springfield make 1911's. All others are copies.

This is a 5 shot group I fired today with my TRP Operator.  I don't want to say the exact distance, because I don't believe it myself.  Let's just say it was longer than 25 yards.

Buy the TRP Operator.  There will be no regrets.  The bull barrel will make sure there won't be.

Dan Wesson makes a stainless rail gun. Would put it ahead either of the guns listed.

This, Dan Wesson. I've handled a few and they have all been really nice.  The stainless with rail is called the Specialist, it has a lot of features for the price too. Been thinking of one for myself.

TRP is tough to beat for an out of the box 1911

I've been more than thrilled with my TRP Operator, carry it everyday too.

I say - neither. Get a Dan Wesson Valor. I have three 1911s right now, but have owned a total of 11 over the years. The Valor is my favorite one, and I have owned a couple of Ed Browns (have 1 now) and a Springfield Custom Shop 1911 as well. I REALLY like the Valor...

I have no experience with the S&W, but my TRP is solid.  I highly recommend it.

Personally, I'm not a stainless fan. But my vote out of the two you listed would be the TRP. Carried one for a while, it was flawless. It was only sold to fund a Customized Colt.

Well thanks for all of the suggestions, but I think I really need to get hands on both the Dan wesson and the trp. Still leaning toward the springer, but research is yielding good reports of the specialist too. First world problems lol. Typically not a fan of stainless either, but I want to dress this one up. I'm buying it to commemorate the birth of my son and hope to pass it on to him some day.

You're not going to find a lot of votes for the S&W PC 1911 but not because it's a bad gun.  It's new and there just aren't a whole lot out there but everything I have read from owners had me wanting one.  I've not got to shoot one but I got to handle one and they are extremely well made.  There was a gun show on TV recently that reviewed the gun and they mentioned there was a guy that test shot the gun with them and he said it was every bit as good as the high end brands at a much lower cost but they couldn't say his name because he worked for one of those high end 1911 manufacturers.  After looking the S&W over I don't doubt his recommendation.  All the S&W Performance Center guns are extremely good guns, I own a 629 V-Comp PC revolver that is absolutely fantastic.  You can bet if it came out of the PC shop at S&W, it's well worth the money.

That said, I'd try to shoot each one first but that's rarely easy to do.  I would buy anything out of the PC shop without a second thought or a test shoot, so, if it were me, out of those two, I'd get the S&W.  Plus, it's a really, really good looking gun in my opinion.

This; and I'm a lifelong S&W buyer.

IMO, the S&W Performance Center is no longer what it once was and much of the difference between the Performance Center and the Pro and regular production models represents more flash and cosmetics these days than actual personal attention and hand fitting during assembly by top notch gunsmiths as was the rule in the past.

The Performance Center 1911s are still more tightly fit than the regular models but I believe that the TRPs are better pistols.

Others will disagree.

Both companies offer excellent customer service.

For your stated purposes, you should also look into the S&W E Series 1911 TA for an excellent railed 1911 at a lower cost.

Like holes cut in the slide and wacky colored grips.

I've got the S&W PC & love carrying it. I'm as hard of a traditionalist as anyone but I like the slide cuts. Mine has been 100% with ball ammo as that's what I carry as well.

I must admit I'm a bit disappointed with the accuracy. Perhaps I expect too much or I'm comparing it to my Les Baer's. But I do like the light weight & the bobtail feel of the grip, so I guess there's a even trade-off there.

The ultimate test of any 1911 (or any gun) is, "would I buy it again knowing what I know now?" I'm not sure, to be honest. I might shop around a bit more but I would still have to have an alloy frame for carry. I'm not sure the other models offer a LW frame?

Interesting, excellent accuracy was one of the things I've read people talk about with the S&W PC 1911.  What kind of accuracy were you getting?

I wish I knew somebody who owned one, I really want to shoot one myself.  My prior experience with S&W PC guns has always been excellent and accuracy has always been a given but now I have to test shoot one before I buy.

At 20 yards, I'm getting 4-5" groups using GA Arms ammo. I've not yet tried different ammo as I always get good results from GA Arms.

With a $1200-1400 gun, *I* would expect nothing more than 2-3" groups.

Dan Wesson Specialist if you want a rail.  I have shot and handles a couple and found them to be a step above other mass produced 1911 in the same price range

Good choice.

Can't go wrong with a TRP or Dan Wesson.

I absolutely love my TRP.

Grips look great.

EDIT - Never mind.  Piece o' cake.
