When I put a new spring in my Commander, it throws the brass 5-7 feet to the right and just behind me in a nice neat pile.
When the brass starts flying a bit too far and isn't in a nice neat pile, it's time for a new spring. There's no round count or time frame. I keep an eye on where the brass goes and replace when needed. YMMV. |

I shoot at an indoor range and the casings bounce off the wall> So, that won't work for me.

2k on commander 5k on govt or when the spring has lost .5" off of free length from new.

1k to 1500k for me. Depending on brass throw, as others have stated.
It's very easy to tape a new spring to every 1000 rd box of ammo to remind yourself. |

I just picked-up a commander length recoil spring guide and FLAT wire spring. 22 lbs. and SS rod and plunger works great, suppose to have longer life (like 5K rounds).

I'm not sure that was ever actually done, but that is what was taught in the school. Failure to do what is taught only brings liability back to the agency. For range use, I would judge it off spring length, ejection pattern, and malfunctions. |
