I am used to govt sized 1911s. Recoil spring changes are usually every 2k. I just got my first command sized 1911 after all these years... Am I remembering right that the recoil spring is supposed to be changed every 1k?

When I put a new spring in my Commander, it throws the brass 5-7 feet to the right and just behind me in a nice neat pile.
When the brass starts flying a bit too far and isn't in a nice neat pile, it's time for a new spring.

There's no round count or time frame.  I keep an eye on where the brass goes and replace when needed.

YMMV.

I shoot at an indoor range and the casings bounce off the wall> So, that won't work for me.

1500 rounds is the recommended interval

This, on a shorter then Commander [Defender], I go 1000 tops and then change them out.

Do NOT, repeat do NOT use any kind of a shok buff on  a Commander length or shorter, you WILL have issues.

1k to 1500k for me. Depending on brass throw, as others have stated.

It's very easy to tape a new spring to every 1000 rd box of ammo to remind yourself.

I just picked-up a commander length recoil spring guide and FLAT wire spring. 22 lbs. and SS rod and plunger works great, suppose to have longer life (like 5K rounds).
