I'd say I'm an OK/Average shooter, used/owned many Sigs, S&W M&Ps, shot other platforms. Never liked 1911's, thought they were a geezer gun :P. Several months ago, A buddy of mine rented one at a range and told me to give it a shot. I don't think I've ever shot that good. I bought a Sig 1911 and manage to get awesome groupings compared to the other handguns I have. I didn't think it was possible, but I love 1911s and can perform excellently. I keep it clean, in shape and have yet to have any of the "1911 Problems" other brand owners complain about.

So now here I am thinking of replacing most of my range/fun guns with 1911's. Thinking about 9mm 1911's, but I don't know the first thing about them. Brands, models, issues, solutions to issues are all foreign to me. Is there a quality 9mm 1911 out there in the >$1000 range used?

I've had good luck with the Springfield Loaded Target and an STI. Each was well under a grand.

I use Metalform and Wilson mags.

If you want one that's over a grand, there are plenty of other options.

had a Colt Commander in 9mm that was a great pistol. Sold it when I got stationed at Drum goddamn NY

Don't know why but a 9mm 1911 has been on my radar here recently.

The Springfield loaded target, Range officer, or Dan Wesson PM9 would be good choices.

The Dan wesson will be more than a $1000 though.

Used to shoot an old Colt Commander LW 9mm, wasn't mine, it was a range gun at the indoor range where I used to work.  Still mad at myself I never bought one, but finally got a Rock Island Armory in 9mm last year.  Fun shooter, works great, cheaper to shoot than a 45, but same operation and manual of arms.

You can get into the RIA for between 400-600 used or new.  Most of the Colt's I still see are in the 800-1300 range, depending on use, condition, original box, etc.

I know there have to be lots more, (Had a Para-Ord P18 for a little while) but the Colt and the RIA are the two 9mm 1911's I have personal experience with, and I don't think you could go wrong with either.

My 9mm's are awesome.  The heft and machine like feel of shooting a 1911, and the easy recoil of a 9mm.  1 wilson and 1 springfield custom.  And like any good 1911, they feel like the slide is on ball bearings....something my glocks cannot feel like.

All good choices.

I have yet to see a SA Loaded 9mm that I felt was fit very well, and they seem prone to minor issues out of the box.

I have fired over 3k rounds from my RIA 9mm FS. It has been great so far.

I have owned Colt, Springfield, and Para 9mm 1911's in both commander and full size variants, and they were ok, but my STI VIP is the all time greatest carry 1911 9mm for my purposes.   I fits in a Glock 19 holster, is the same form factor, 15 rounds, only about 4 oz heavier than a G19 (alloy frame), but very expensive and sometimes scarce in the marketplace.  Will shoot 2" 25 yard 5 shot groups with good 124/126/147 loads.

That guys who writes for Dillon's Blue Press (Thomas?) is one of many people who have written reviews you can Google.   The 2011 frame is not for everybody, but having shot one in competition for 17 years it became the first choice for me.  I like Glocks and M&P's just fine but if I really have to hit something and repeat it fast, I want my VIP.

Were I going for a single stack 9mm 1911 I would only choose STI based on the ones I have had the chance to shoot, some of theirs like the Spartans/Trojans are definitley high value for a low dollar.

I have two Colt government lengths, a combat commander and a defender and they have all run great for me. The one issue I have had is on the defender it doesn't like to lock the slide back on the last round with low powered Winchester white box but is 100% on 147 grain which is what I carry anyway.

The cool thing is you can do double duty with 38 super on it if you want. I bought a barrel, link and link pin and can switch back and forth on my governments by changing a barrel and a mag. Fun stuff!

I've been lurking around the 1911 forum for a while now and I also am interested in a 9mm version of the 1911.  I have hoarded a shit load of 9mm FMJ ammo compared to my small measly pile of .45 cal ammo.  The few models I've been interested in are:

* Kimber Aegis III
* Springfield EMP
* S&W Pro 1911 9mm

I definitely want to grab on to a Kimber as it looks sexy and functional in design.  May look in to a Springfield Range Officer also.  But I definitely want a 1911 in a 9mm.  Cheap to shoot and accurate as heck.

I have cheap RIA.

Not bad accuracy with reload.  The bushing is the same size so you can get undersized bushing for tightening the barrel.

The ejector and ejector slot is different from .45.  So you can't swap slide to frame with .45

I use .45 magazine for tactical magazine switch practice.  They are the same dimension.

Spring is of different rating.  Easier to rack the slide than .45

Cheaper to shoot.

I've been looking at these as well. The aegis ii is advertised as being a smaller grip. Is this in the width, trigger reach, or both? I have fairly big hands so I wouldn't mind something thinner but I don't want something that's too short. Regular 1911s are already pretty damn ergonomic.

I wouldn't replace all your other styles with just 1911's.  But I have longed for a 9mm 1911 forever and that I think you definitely need to add.  I got to shoot one last year and I knew why I longed for one for sooo long.  It is what I thought it would be.  One of the sweetest shooting pistols I've every fired.   Although I think my experience with the USP 9mm comes close.

9mm 1911 -- My STI Tactical 4.0 is awesome.  Can't go wrong with any of the $1200-2000 STIs really.

Another one to consider would be the wide body 2011.

By your >$1000 budget, if the 2011 interests you and you're willing to spend in the $3500-4500 range, SVI.

The Springfield RO is well within your price range, I have one in 45ACP and they are nice guns, I have 1911s in 9MM in a RIA and Colt, very funs guns to shoot, I use mostly metal form mags.

If you don't want to spend the ~$750-800 that 9mm ROs sell for, Rock Island 1911s are GTG. The 9mm Tactical model usually sells for around $450.

you cant beat the ria they stand toe to toe with the rest maybe not as pretty but accurate and dependable as the rest.

9mm from the 1911 platform is just plain awesome.  This is a completely stock, factory original Rock Island Armory 1911 TAC 9mm.  I was shooting 105 grain Federal "Guard Dog" ammunition, isosceles stance unsupported at 10 yards.  Nothing fancy, just slow aimed fire.  Of course, there was the added motivation of "saving the ta-tas".

I have hand size is between medium and large.  So it is hard to get the right fit I want on some guns.  My Glock 19 is perfect where my old Taurus PT-99 was a bit bigger grip with the factory furniture.  I have a good feeling that the Kimber Aegis III will be the one for me.

For what it's worth,

My RIA TAC has over 7000 rounds down the pipe with 2 honest "I have no idea what happened" malfunctions. It has had 8 malfunctions in total and they were all directly related to improper magazine insertion, worn out mag spring, or work out recoil spring. I will say it has only shot 124 and 147 grain ball because that is what I reload. It is the most accurate 9mm I have ever owned.

I recently got a S&W Pro 9mm 1911. I like the feel, it is fit well, and it has been accurate with one load. It has had no malfunctions. However it has a firing pin block so I am going to have to desensitize the grip safety and have a trigger job done before it will be good to go for me. I will say it has had zero malfunctions in the first 300 rounds and that 300 rounds has been a mix of 147 grain reloads, 124 grain reloads, and 115 factory ammo with Tripp, Wilson, and Chekmate mags.

Not a 1911, FWIW.  I'm sure you know, but others might not.

I have a Colt Defender in 9mm. The gun has been 100% reliable, but my accuracy with it stinks.
It is very tight, but starting to loosen up. I've had a couple of instances of brass hitting the forehead.
Overall, its a good gun, I just need to learn how to shoot it
