RIA and ATI are both good to go. CDNN has a railed ATI 1911 commander size with a threaded barrel right now for $399. Hard deal to beat. RIA has a $50 mail in rebate going right now - needs to be post marked by the 31st though.

I've got one (haven't gotten to fire yet) and my RIAs (tactical, GI, and 9mm Compact) have all run like tops.

I have two Rock Islands, a 1911 GI model, and a 9mm Tactical model, both have run 100%, with the exception of having to shave the right side grip at the top to allow the ambi-extended safety on the Tactical to fully disengage (For what it's worth, the wood grips it came with didn't have the problem, it was a set I put on later).

I haven't ventured into the ATI versions yet, but the price point is almost too good to pass up.

American Classic II

The blued model is less than $400 now. Better deal than basic RIA.

I just wish to hell that they'd put a more prominant hump on the palm swell. I've had issues with engaging the safety with my two hand grip.

I love both of my RIA 9mm pistols. Have a couple of buddies who own some and they really like theirs also. I've heard very good things from Metro Arms owners but have never fired one myself. Never had any dealing with ATI so I can't give an opinion on those.

I am not very knowledgeable about 1911's , but have been toying with buying one.

The Para Expert Commander for $499 with $100 rebate at
CDNN seems like a great beer budget deal.

I have read some reviews, and most all owners were very happy with the firearm.

I handled a Metro Arms American Classic SS full size in a LGS, and it is a beautiful 1911. $549

Opinions are a dime a dozen, but for my dime it would be the STI Spartan.  A little more $ than some of the others, but worth it I think.

Agreed - and I an NO fan of Taurus.  I bought the basic blued PT1911 model (used but barely fired) for $450 on a lark - it has all the base desired features people want, operates nicely, AND has a surprisingly great trigger - a little heavy (maybe 6 pounds) but extremely crisp with NO creep.  FAR better trigger than any of the other budget 1911s on the market.  I was quite surprised at how good it is.

Just about any 1911 will prove to be functional and reliable, however, anything under $800 will almost surely have an absolutely horrible trigger...except the Taurus.

Holy hell if I didn't just pick up a G19 I would be purchasing that ATI. The temptation is strong but I've got to make purchases for other people with the holidays coming up.

Consider me uninformed, dumb, or whatever you want.  But what is ATI?  I can't find anything about them.  Are they strictly an importer, or do they manufacture any firearms?

There's an earlier thread in the 1911 forum on someone who posted an lengthy review of their ATI 1911, can't remember what they paid but it was the cheapest new 1911 price I've seen, and sounded good for the money. ATI's Beretta 92 clones always got good reviews as well. But I have to recommend the Rock Island Armory line, they're easy to find locally, they have top shelf customer service and there are a lot of models to choose from. I've owned a 9mm RIA GI and still own my .45 RIA Tac II. I'd still have the 9mm but got tired of the tiny sights of the GI and there aren't many aftermarket options. The RIA Tac & Tac IIs come from the factory with good useable sights and the trigger on my Tac II out of the box is the best budget trigger I've used, better than an entry level Springfield.

i wouldn't spend any less than $600 on a 1911.
also i would make sure its a reputable brand.

springfield mil spec go as low as $608. on impact guns.

thats cheapest and most reliable way to do it.

Apparently.

Guess I'll have to chuck my 5" RIA GI and my 3.5" Citadel in the garbage now.

It's too bad, they have both run 100%, too.

ATI

Palmetto State Armory was clearing them out a couple months back for $299.  Were even cheaper a month or two before.  TexasTony did a review on his in the Handgun forum.

Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5

I bought one from Palmetto for $299.  I had been thinking of either going with the Rock Island 2011 Tactical or the Magnum Research.  Pretty much everybody that has a Rock Island, of any model, has liked it.  I didn't know if I wanted to spend even relatively inexpensive money on a 1911 before knowing whether or not I would like it or if it would like me.  When the ATI Commander came up for sale for $299, I couldn't pass it up.  From all the reading I've done, most seem happy with the 2 ATI offerings that Palmetto had.  The Titan seems to be the most problematic and I would shy away from one of those.  I have 250 rounds through mine and am satisfied with it for the money.  They are no longer being sold at that price point that I can find.  If you're looking at $470 for an ATI or anything from Rock Island, I'd go with the Rock Island.

I just got  Citadel 9mm and took it apart and honed as much as I could to make it smooth , shot 2 mags through it AOK . But did some reading an checked the extractor Claw and it had no spring at all ,it's a wonder I didn't have jams but I did notice cases going all over . So took it out an set it at about 23 ozs  and shot it again with all cases landing at my feet . I like this pistol lol

ATI.  Owned one.  Excellent fit and finish at price point; better than other makes in "budget" class.  Shot well.  Best of the "budget" 1911s.
