THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Is there anything I can do to make the take down not require these things? I've seen the reverse plugs in Brownells, but I'm not sure if they will accomplish what I'm after. If I'm stuck with what I've got, so be it, but if I can swap it for anything, that'd be great. What says the 1911 gurus? Any input will be appreciated. |

Dawson may sell a tooless guide rod for a shorter barrel.

I checked out Dawson and everything I saw seemed to be for STI guns only....

I had a Kimber Tactical Pro 4" and a SA LW Champion 4". I know you pain. Here is a secret, no tools are needed. Clear the weapon as always, move the slide to the Take Down Notch, push slide stop out and remove slide. Use free hand to capture recoil spring in case it decides to travel into your TV or a window. Remove recoil sping and guide rod. Assemble in reverse.

I had tried reassembling without the paperclip on my 4" Kimber and I couldn't get it to work.....I guess I need to try it again and hold my mouth a different way. Thanks. |

I stopped using tools on my 4" Kimber and Springfield Champion.
I feel like it's safer without the paperclip or tools, those tiny paperclip/plastic pieces are holding back a lot of energy and they always made me nervous, especially the Kimber. Without the tools there is significantly less pressure on the recoil spring(s), and it is just like taking down any other pistol. In fact I have no idea why or how the whole tools required for takedown thing got started, it is completely unnecessary. The Springfield take down method isn't too bad with the plastic piece, but god help you if your paperclip lets go on the Kimber... |

I was just thinking about it, and the trouble I had with my 4" Kimber might be because it has a full length guide rod (Kimber Pro Aegis II) |

What are you using a paperclip for? I've never used any tools to disassemble any of my 1911s.

Bull barrel, reverse plug, bushing less 1911s require a paper clip (usually) for removal of the recoil assembly from the slide assembly.
If all you own are 5 and 4.5 inch standard set up 1911s you will never need a paper clip. |
