THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I have a Russian Makarov IJ-70-380 that had a bulged barrel. I was able to get the bulged portion drilled out and get it disassembled. Now I need to remove the remaining stub of barrel and replace it with a new barrel. I got the barrel pin out but the stub of barrel seems to be in there tightly. I've search and found mention of a barrel press and freezing it to remove but apparently the presses were pretty poorly made and not available any more anyways. Any advice? Soak, freeze and hammer?

Also, any advice on a replacement barrel? I'm ok with .380 but if I can change to 9mmMak with just a barrel I might rather have that. Any recommendation or brands/places to avoid?

Well, I got the barrel removed, I put it in the freezer overnight and it apparently loosened up enough for me to knock it out. Now I need to find/choose the replacement. Could use some advise on that.

There are some 9X18 barrels here... http://www.buymilsurp.com

My EG is 9X18 and, IMO, there is enough suitable SD and range ammo available to make it a viable choice over .380.

I would go with a surplus barrel in 380 or 9x18m they have proven plenty accurate, and they are chrome lined.

There are aftermarket barrels that are extended and threaded, and stainless steel etc. I have not heard anything bad about them, but the one my father bought from Numerich has an oversized barrel pin and hole, so you have to drill out the frame, not something everyone is up to.

If I convert to 9x18 do I need to change anything other than the barrel (extractor, recoil spring, magazine, etc)? Also will any barrel work or does it need to be Russian since it is a Russian gun?

The only difference in the 9x18 Maks and the 380 maks is the barrel and the markings on the slide.

Any of the Makarov PM's from different countries barrels will swap, just make sure you dont fall for the old "Hungarian Makarov or Polish Makarov" thing. Sometimes companies or individuals will market Feg-63 and P64 or CZ-82 parts as Makarov parts. Make sure the barrel is for an actual Makarov PM.

The ony problem you could run into is the barrel pin hole might not be lined up to the hole in the frame if you get a used take-off barrel.

This thread has me thinking.

I have read that the PMM is designed to withstand greater chamber pressures for more potent 9x18 rounds. What exactly is different between these pistols? Is it only the barrel? If they do interchange, couldn't you run a PMM barrel in a PM and safely use higher pressure rounds without worry?

Update:

Well, I finally got the barrel installed (a new East German 9x18 barrel from Numrich). Installation was a lot easier than removing the old one. Drilling the hole for the barrel pin was not the chore I expected. I didn't have a barrel press either. Now I just have to test fire but it cycles dry just fine so I don't expect any issues. Now I have to figure out how to remark as a 9x18 instead of the original .380.
